Mount Maunganui chase second successive

Northern Districts Club Champions Platinum Pacific Reclad Mount Maunganui is just two games away from defending its title – and again earn the right to represent ND at the National Club Champs to be played in Auckland later in the season.

Today the Bay of Plenty champions are at home at Blake Park in a semi-final match-up against Hamilton representatives Hamilton Old Boys'.

The game between the Bay of Plenty and Waikato team renews a regional rivalry that stretches back decades.

There are no more intense rivalries at the annual ND tournaments than the encounters between Bay of Plenty and Hamilton teams.

Mount Maunganui advanced to the last four when they despatched Hamilton's Eastern Suburbs in a high scoring encounter.

Batting first the Waikato side set a large target when they were removed for 244.

However, Mount Maunganui was equal to the challenge and got home with three wickets in hand.

While Sheldon Kearns and Nick Smith posted totals in the 40s, the other Mount batsmen all got starts which seriously assisted their team's quest for victory.

Hamilton Old Boys' showed that they are serious about their ND Club Championship aspirations when the derailed Element IMF Cadets in the quarterfinals.

After setting a target of 251, the Hamilton side bowled Cadets out for 145 to post an easy victory.
