This morning's incident which resulted in a 73-year-old man being bitten several times and a Bichon dog being put down involved a Bull terrier, not a Pit-bull as originally reported by police.
Speaking to SunLive this afternoon, Tauranga City Council animal control team leader Brent Lincoln confirmed the breed of the dog in question after some confusion following the initial story, which can be read by clicking here.
The attack happened this morning on Grenada Street in Arataki. Photo: File.
'It's 100 per cent Bull terrier from what we can see,” says Brent.
An elderly couple were out walking their dog when the attack happened at around 9am on Grenada Street in Arataki.
The dog, which was registered and microchipped, will be kept in the city council pound until an investigation in to the incident has been completed.
'As I understand it, the dog was out roaming and attacked a small dog being walked by an elderly couple,” says Brent.
'It was in its own neighbourhood.”
Brent also confirmed the dog was already known to the animal control team.

Dog confusion?

The answer to that question is really simple, the whole place "has gone to the dogs".

Yes I seen dogs known to the council go on for months!! Everyone in the neighbourhood fearing an attack and the owners deliberately not paying there fines or fencing their dogs. Only for them to be banned as a dog owner. Them shifting out of the neighbourhood and getting the dogs back after a short period of time. Council you know these dogs and they should be removed before this happens. Pit Bull, Bull Terrier or any other dog that is threatening people. Responsible dog owners have their dogs fenced and they make sure their gates etc are shut. Had you acted when this dog became known to you this wouldn't of happened. The owners will get a slap on the hand.. I am a dog owner and I am so over people with these dogs.
The breed doesn't matter

What's important was that it appears to have been roaming. If guilty, the owner should be jailed and the dog put down.
Already known to animal control

Says it all. Maybe animal control needs to harden up on the owners of these dogs instead of the softly softly approach. Too much PC going on.
roaming

So we're told it's not a Pit Bull Terrier but a 'Bull Terrier' but is that a Staffordshire Bull Terrier or an English Bull Terrier or even an American Staffordshire Bull Terrier & the answer is probably a crossbreed maybe with a dab of Labrador heaven forbid. What we have here is an irresponsible owner problem - not a dog breed problem!!

My thoughts are with the family of the poor wee mite who got ripped to bits by a dog who has an owner that was not in control of their animal. Ihope the dog is not put down, just fine the owner.
How is it...

... OK for people to be bitten and have their dog killed while walking, because of the negligence of some other dog owner? The breed doesn't matter, as most here have pointed out, the dog was not controlled. The owners should make reparations to the people attacked and they should be banned from owning a dog forever. If you can't take ownership seriously and responsibly, then it is a privilege you should not be entitled to. There are many decent, responsible, pet owners who will be outraged by this. It really is time we stopped blaming the animals and it is time we toughened up on irresponsible owners.
The dog was already known to the animal control team.
