Taupo blaze keeps crews busy

Firefighters from Tokoroa and Rotorua were called to help with a major fire in Taupo overnight.

Around 60 firefighters and 10 trucks battled the blaze at the The Laminex Group's premises on Centennial Drive from around 7.35pm.

Crews spent most of the night trying to get fires in four large hoppers under control.

A fire had also spread across a conveyor belt system which was used to transport wood shavings and wood products, says Central Lakes area commander Graham Fuller.

He says several of the hoppers were between four and five storeys high.

'We've managed to close the conveyor belt system down so as to stop it spreading the fire throughout the factory,” said Graham.

Firefighters were using both foam and water to control the blaze.

Graham says the blaze was now under control but it would take several days to completely extinguish.
