A car has been ripped in two after a serious crash in the Waikato early this morning.

Police were called to the single vehicle crash on Koromatua Road, near Hamilton, just after 4.30am.

The impact of the crash caused the vehicle to split in two.

The engine remained on the road whlie the rest of the vehicle crashed into a nearby paddock.

The two people in the car were taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Koromatua Road will be closed while the crash scene is cleared, and traffic diversions are in place.

The serious crash unit is currently investigating the cause of the incident.
