Most Coromandel townships will start receiving additional rubbish and recycling kerbside collections from Boxing Day this Saturday.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council says this will see recycling collections change from fortnightly to weekly, along with an extra weekly kerbside collection day.

The summer Kerbside peak period runs from Boxing Day up until February 13, with council advising locals that no collections will take place on Christmas Day this Friday.

Summer vacation hotspots like Whangamata and Pauanui will have three collection days each week.

While others like Matarangi, Whitianga, Onemana, Opoutere and Tairua, will receive two collections each week for the summer peak collection period.

The only town with no change over the summer is Thames. Weekly blue bag and fortnightly black bin and green crate collections will continue with the normal routine.

'If you plan to leave before your collection day, don't put your rubbish on the street because animals and birds get into the bags and your rubbish and personal information will be strewn around the streets,” asks council.

'Drop your official blue bags and recycling at any of our refuse transfer stations at no extra charge. We'd much rather that than have the Coromandel look like a giant tip.”

Coromandel refuse transfer stations are also now on summer hours and there will be a number of 24-hour recycling drop-off centres.

But council says it is increasingly worried about the types of refuse dumped at its afterhours drop-off bins which are mainly for recycling and rubbish bags.

'Each year between Christmas and New Year, the afterhour's drop-off points are abused with all types of rubbish being dumped, which creates hazards for others using the bins for their intended purpose.

'The dumped waste also creates a hazard for those who have to clear up the mess as they cannot be sure what they are dealing with.”

Inappropriate rubbish, like unbagged offal, window glass and broken furniture for example, should be dumped at refuse transfer stations.

Council is asking the community for help to keep the drop-off areas free of hazardous rubbish so others can dispose of their recycling and rubbish bags safely and correctly.

'Please report individuals who illegally dump materials that are not recycling or in official blue rubbish bags by phoning us on 07-868-0200.

'If your rubbish is not suitable for the drop-off points, please use the refuse transfer station facilities on the days that the site is open,” says council.

INAPPROPRIATE RUBBISH FOR AFTERHOURS BINS:

  • Unlabelled containers or drums with unidentified liquids
  • Boxes of rubbish often containing broken glass
  • Unbagged offal
  • Broken concrete or dirt
  • Window glass, broken or intact
  • Commercial waste - electrical wiring, broken PVC pipes, wood and green waste
  • Car parts
  • Broken furniture
  • Dead animals
