Heavy vehicle ban in Matamata

Heavy vehicles are banned from using Matamata's main street over January and February while the Broadway through the central business district is resurfaced.

While there are diversions for the trucks, the NZ Transport Agency is recommending heavy vehicles avoid the Matamata during the works.

Detours will be in place day and night from 24 January until approximately 10 February to ensure major resurfacing works are not compromised.

The job is split into five working areas and staged to minimise disruption to residents and businesses.

Section 1 on Firth Street, SH27, from the SH24 roundabout to the Caltex service station, is underway and will be completed before Christmas. There will be traffic management in place but no closures.

The main works are in Sections 2 and 3 on Broadway and will be done together and at night starting in the second week of January. It may take five weeks, depending on the weather.

Work will take place mainly at night to allow business hours traffic to use Broadway as usual during business hours. There may be ramps at each end until the completion of the final surface course.

Works will be programmed so that businesses operating after-hours like cafes, bars and restaurants are affected as little as possible.

Works on Broadway's main commercial area will all be done at night to cause the least disruption to businesses and customers.

The NZ Transport Agency says it will monitor dust and use water trucks if required.

The sections at the south end between the primary school and Gull on SH27 will be done together, mainly during the day because it is a residential area and there is enough road width for traffic to pass.

To minimise traffic disruption, there may be some three nights of work required on the Burwood Road roundabout.

Detours will be well sign-posted and a traffic controller will be at each end to assist. If trucks need to get in and out of the town for pick-ups and deliveries there are options available.

The detour routes for trucks include Burwood Road-SH27 and Tower Road-Rawhiti Avenue-SH27.
