'Pumicelands Rural Fire Authority is satisfied that the fire that started near the summit on the north eastern face on Wednesday night has been extinguished,” says TCC communications manager Aimee Driscoll.
'The upper tracks and summit will remain closed and security will remain onsite until at least 5pm while geologists and abseilers continue stability investigations of the rock face near the summit above the Waikorire track.”
Geologists will return early next week to complete their investigations and assessments.
The Waikorire track will remain closed until this work is completed.
The city council is expecting the remainder of the Mount's tracks to re-open from 5pm today – apart from the Waikorire track.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing. There are reports a flare was sighted near the summit before the fire started, at about midnight Wednesday.
Once the alarm was raised more than 40 fire fighters struggled with the steep terrain in an effort to control its spread.
