$1.8M Ohauiti overbridge announced

A new overbridge will connect Ohauiti with the Windermere Polytech Campus.

'This will make traveling by bike and foot both safer and more accessible,” says Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller, who advocated for the overbridge in response to increased traffic on state highway 29A.

'We need to ensure people have a range of choices for traveling around their community and this overbridge will open up great opportunities for walking and cycling in the area.”

This announcement follows the one made by Transportation Minister Simon Bridges of the final section of the Western Bay of Plenty's cycling network from Te Tumu Road in Papamoa to Paengaroa Village being complete.

This new cycleway spans 10 kilometres and is one of the projects funded by the $17 million partnership between government, the New Zealand Transport Agency, Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council.

'Projects like the one completed today showcase what can be achieved when agencies work together,” says Todd.

'We are currently experiencing booming migration and growth, this cycleway is a great asset which will be used by locals and tourists to get around our fantastic region.

'Dedicated routes for pedestrians and cyclists are just one of the ways the Government is working to ensure the Bay of Plenty is a well-connected and safe place for families and visitors.”

Other projects in the pipeline include the $8.7 million Omokoroa to Tauranga cycleway and the $6.9 million spend to connect cycle links around Tauranga.

What an absolute waste of money! Do that many people live in Ohauiti who go to the poly daily? I think not!

Finally a safe way for non car commuters to cross the state highway. Now add an off-road path the whole way along the state highway.

If you get a map of Tauranga you will find that there are suburbs called Welcome Bay and Maungatapu who's residents will use this overbridge as well to get to the polytech.

You are quick with the keyboard comments, but obviously, you have never tried to cross this busy main road. Maybe you should try it (especially at 4.30 5.00pm) before posting your lame protest about a waste of money. $1.8 Million is cheap compared to the cost of ongoing medical expenses to anyone who might get hit by the traffic as it is today, that is if they're lucky to survive..

It all sounds so good until you wonder where a cycle track on Windemere Drive will be made, there is no space, cars parked on both sides of a very busy road. Also, how many students would use it, very I think

...I see very few pedestrians or cyclists going to the Polytechnic and I know the area well. Any cyclists using Windermere Drive tend to ride on the footpath as both sides of the road are lined with cars (the preferred mode of student transport). Besides - Muller notes that...
