Matakana meets the Mount

Matakana Island, laid down the gauntlet to the other contenders in the Seeka KI Western BOP Rugby competition last weekend.

A 39-12 victory over Judea on the island served notice that Matakana Island has its sights firmly set on the Western BOP Championship silverware – along with a berth in Baywide rugby.

Today Matakana Island defends the Hardy Rosebowl (Western BOP Challenge Trophy), which it took from Judea last weekend.

However, they will face a stern challenge from the Mount Maunganui second team, which has been one of the dominant forces in the Western BOP competition during the last decade.

The Mount side lifted aloft the Combined Cup, which is awarded to the Western BOP Champions, in three successive seasons commencing with its first championship victory in 2005.

Another team to win the Combined Cup in recent seasons is Tauranga Sports.

This weekend they are the main attraction at the Tauranga Domain when Greerton Marist pays a visit.

A local Te Puke derby takes place in Te Puke between Rangiuru and Te Puke Sports, Eastern Districts hosts Te Puna, with Judea facing newcomer Katikati at Maharaia Winiata Park.
