Powerball jackpots to $22M

Powerball has jackpotted to $22 million this weekend.

The $20 million prize pool was not struck last night, meaning it will now roll over to Saturday night's draw.

One Lotto player in Lower Hutt won $1 million last night.

However, one Lotto player is celebrating a $1 million win after striking Lotto first division last night.

The winning ticket was sold at Moera Corner Dairy & Lotto in Lower Hutt.

As Kiwis around the country imagine what it would be like to win $22 million with Powerball this week, 10 lucky players this year have already discovered how it feels to become instant millionaires thanks to Lotto.

These winners are part of an exclusive club of more than 530 Kiwis who have become millionaires since Lotto started in 1987, including three New Zealanders who have won big with Powerball so far this year.

One Strike player from Gore will be sharing a toast after winning $248,970 with Strike Four tonight. The winning ticket was sold at Countdown Gore.

Anyone who bought their ticket from either of the above winning stores should write their name on the back of the ticket and check it immediately at any Lotto outlet, online at mylotto.co.nz or through the Lotto NZ ticket-checker app.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? But anyone with even rudimentary math ability can realize that Lotto is a very poor investment statistically. The good side is that it does get otherwise "wasted" money back into the community, so it is important for people to keep playing it, even though it is NOT a "good bet". One of the ways to encourage this is to provide colossal potential prizes; if they weren't huge, people wouldn't play. I believe the MOST important thing Lotto does is that it gives us hope :-) No matter how badly things may be going, you can console yourself with: "Never mind, maybe I'll win Lotto..." You won't, but it does no harm to dream...

Well I have been waiting for the payouts but you have just destroyed my belief. I thought it was a solid investment but you say not. How dare they? Thank god for people like you to warn us of such scams.
