DHBs could decide water fluoridation

To fluoridate or not to fluoridate? That is the question which district health boards could soon be responsible for answering.

This week the Government announced a possible legislation change which would see DHBs, rather than local councils, deciding whether or not fluoride will be added to communities' water supplies.

DHBs currently provide expert advice on fluoridation to local councils' who are responsible for making the final decision.

Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne Peter says giving DHBs the final decision recognises that water fluoridation is a 'health-related issue”.

'Deciding which water supplies should be fluoridated aligns closely to DHBs' current responsibilities and expertise,” says Peter.

'It makes sense for DHBs to make fluoridation decisions for their communities based on local health priorities and by assessing health-related evidence.”

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says about 2.3 million New Zealander's currently have access to fluoridated water.

But under the proposed legislation change, a further 1.4m Kiwis living in places where networked community water supplies are not currently fluoridated stand to benefit, he says.

'New Zealand has high rates of preventable tooth decay and increasing access to fluoridated water will improve oral health, and mean fewer costly trips to the dentist for more New Zealanders,” says Jonathan.

'Water fluoridation has been endorsed by the World Health Organization and other international health authorities as the most effective public health measure for the prevention of dental decay.”

In January Whakatane District councillors voted six to five in favour of discontinuing to add fluoride to the Whakatane and Ohope water supplies, despite strong community support for the practice in the two communities.

Following the announcement, Bay of Plenty District Health Board's CEO Helen mason expressed her disappointment with the decision, saying improving oral health is an important priority for the board which strongly supports water fluoridation.

But then in February, the Whakatane District Council adopted a notice of motion to revoke the January decision, with councillors voting six to four in favour of once again adding fluoride to the two towns' water supplies.

The retraction of the January decision earned the ire of national anti-fluoridation lobby group Fluoride Free NZ who labelled it a 'shameful flip-flop”.

FFNZ national coordinator Mary Byrne has slammed this latest proposal saying the proposed legislation change is a misguided response to the growing public demand on councils to stop fluoridation.

'The Government is now taking the decision away from local councils and communities and putting the power into the hands of DHBs who are under the direct control of Central Government,” says Mary.

'Councillors in many areas have had the opportunity to hear both sides of the issue, including the latest science. Like most New Zealanders, once they are aware of all the facts, they become much less likely to support fluoridation.”

She also believes this legislation is an attempt to shut down future public debate and force fluoridation onto everyone, including people who are hypersensitive to fluoride.

Mary also dismisses claims that DHBs will still be open to public input, labelling it as 'pure spin, since the DHBs are contractually obligated to carry out MoH policy”.

'The legislation proposed for later this year would eventually be in place by 2018. Therefore, New Zealanders from all corners of the country need to voice their strong opposition.”

This means fluoridation is coming to tauranga. No good reason against it.

Hmmmm

When i'm feeling unwell, I tend to go to see my local doctor rather than the vet. Although they are both very well versed in the working and anatomy of sentient beings, I prefer to listen to someone that understands human anatomy and well-being and that "knows what they are talking about". So if you want to believe what Joe down the road writes on his computer and assures you that "He knows what he's talking about" just buy your water from the supermarket.

the Government and Ministry Of Health are gutless

Very disappointed BUT not surprised that the Government, the Minister of Health, should be hiding behind the DHBs in regards this issue. Bit like Easter Trading hours and passing the buck to local authorities. To fluoridate or not to fluoridate with accompanying criteria should be a New Zealand Standard. Man up Mr Minister of Health and stop selectively passing the buck!

This shouldn't even be an issue it is so obvious what the right decision should be. Rotten teeth in children will lead to further problems down the track affecting health and loss of confidence having to wear expensive dentures. If that is what some parents consider good parenting then they need counselling.

Totally Unacceptable.

The people once again are being ramroaded. Council or Government must stand firm on what people want. Have a BINDING Referendum. It will be time for the WAGGY guys to stand up again, I reckon. Once again you will spend millions of dollars for all this. Fluoride is in Toothpaste. Give free toothpaste out at schools if families cannot afford it. Our Rates Bills will all go up again. Fluoride occurs naturally but in greater concentrations it becomes a poison to our bodies. Think long and hard about this. Write to SImon Bridges and the other MP's and express your concern.

Govt should make the decision

Posted on 14-04-2016 12:56 | By Annalist

Whether to put fluoride in water supplies should be NZ wide and therefore made by the government via the Ministry of Health. It is just plain stupid to have different rules in different areas.

Past Referendum

Posted on 14-04-2016 13:01 | By Mackka

I seem to remember that we had a local council referendum on this subject some time ago. The result was a resounding 'NO'. I hope those responsible for the decision in the future will remember this fact and go with the will of the people!

You have a choice

Posted on 14-04-2016 13:24 | By The Tomahawk Kid

How about This view! When you are sick or unwell you make the personal CHOICE of whether to visit the doctor (or listen to Joe down the road.) You have the option. Fluoridation gives no option. It is forced upon people whether they like it or not. The council or the DHB should not have the right to mass medicate the population via the water supply that they have the monopoly on. PS I am not against fluoride - I AM against the use of force, and I am against govt and council using their monopoly and power to destroy peoples rights. Even minorities have rights (despite the fact govt & council think[sic] otherwise.

As far as I am concerned the fluoride debate voiced from most people completely, and again misses the point. To the best of my knowledge the desire to fluoridate water is to protect children from tooth decay - so apparently the answer is, lets mass medicate when the majority who regularly clean their teeth with fluoride toothpaste and do not overly indulge in sugary drinks have no requirement to be regularly dosed with this known poison ( Most chemicals are poisonous when taken in excess) - so good dental hygiene should be sufficient but yet again the majority have to suffer due to the poor choices of the minority - and no prizes for guessing which children have the worst teeth - the statistics clearly show.

We never hear form Health Board members

Posted on 14-04-2016 13:56 | By BullShtAlert

I wonder what excactly the members of theHealth Board do for their money. We elect some of them are others are appointed. The great thing about Sunlive is that we can now ask each Health Board member which way they will vote on this issue. Can't wait for their replies.

Natural

fluoride is fine but the toxic waste they put in the water no way, as it is chlorine yet another poison is not taken back out, Hamilton does, here we cannot drink it so have to collect my own water, but for the sake of others im against poison added to the water

I can't list all the health board members in the title but could you all please reply with your views on fluoridation. The more I think about it, you are elected or chosen I believe to make decisions for the health of our community, or is the Board is just a rubber stamper?

Opinion from experience

Posted on 14-04-2016 15:40 | By How about this view!

When moving our family from Hamilton to Tauranga, there were numerous questions from dentists and school dental health nurses about the condition of our childrens' teeth. When we explained that we had recently moved from Hamilton, the resounding response was "Oh, that's right, they have fluoride in Hamilton!" To all the nay sayers.... what is the health and wellbeing of your children and grandchildren worth and how much salt and sugar (Also poisonous and harmful) are you consuming Two, three or four times a day with your breakfast, lunch and dinner? Anyway, how much water that hasn't been boiled is drunk these days by adults, let alone by children?

Free fluoride tablets!

Posted on 14-04-2016 16:48 | By simple.really

My Dentist tells me that to get the benefit of fluoridated water, you need to drink 3 litres per day. So I don't see how fluoridated water is going to improve dental health unless everyone drinks 3 litres of water each day....yeah right. How about making fluoride tablets free to those who want them? I grew up with fluoridated water, had no fizzy drinks or lollies, yet still ended up with a mouthful of fillings. And it made the water taste vile. My kids have no decay or fillings, simply a good healthy diet. Don't want them having fluoride so will buy a filter.

Isn't it strange?

Posted on 14-04-2016 17:53 | By astex

If I am a patient at a DHB hospital or other facility I have the LEGAL RIGHT, to refuse medication, treatment or even food yet THEY are to have the ability to force EVERYONE outside their premises to be mass medicated. One other important consideration..... Today Fluoride, tomorrow ????????????

here we go again

Posted on 14-04-2016 18:46 | By sobeit

The pro fluoride lobby has friends in high places! Can't swing democracy at Local Govt level so head to the DHB's who have low public recognition and some are not elected. They are appointed by the government.Guess who's tune they dance to ? This issue is not about some children and their inability to adjust their diet so their teeth don't rot. It's about the right of the entire population to have a free choice as to what they put in their body.To argue right or wrong over fluoride provides the 'pro's' with just the distraction that can win over those who are susceptible to emotional arguements.

REAL evidence

Posted on 15-04-2016 13:56 | By Papamoaner

The fact is that large communities have been drinking fluoridated water since the 1950's and are in good health. Nothing nasty has happened to them. Prior to that, a large portion of the adult population had false teeth. SIMPLE FACT. So what's the problem all you finger waggers?

Opening the door problems

Posted on 15-04-2016 16:30 | By astex

From what I understand, except when a person is incapable of making the decision, It is against the DHB policy to give medication without the persons "informed consent". My concern is also that the door is opened for government via it's DHB's to add more medications to the list without the informed consent of the public.

The fluoride they put in water

Posted on 16-04-2016 11:46 | By Cydifor

is a by-product of super-phosphate. The fluoride which occurs naturally is calcium fluoride. The stuff they dump in our water is cumulative and stays in your body. Does not appeal to me at all and they don't tell you that. I don't want to be ingesting the stuff and as your wise correspondent points out, you have to drink 3 litres of the stuff to make any difference. It seems that to help Maori kids we all have to have the stuff crammed down our throats. Why have so many first world countries banned the stuff. I have family who live in the country on tank water and they have never had fluoride and they have also never had any fillings. Do these Maori kids drink water or do they drink sugary drinks. Educate them and don't mass-medicate the rest of us.

It's funny...

Posted on 16-04-2016 18:58 | By Bay Citizen

...to read all the anti-fluoride campaigners' arguments. The scientific ignorance on display is breath taking and instantly discredits anything else they say, even though the argument about personal freedom does have some merit. This really should be a national decision, not a postcode lottery though.

Mass medication without consent

Posted on 26-04-2016 14:49 | By Logos

Thank goodness my family don't rely on town water. Let the sheeple drink the fluoride.

Poison?

Posted on 13-05-2016 15:17 | By Baystyle

I have been putting a popular brand of toothpaste containing fluoride in my mouth daily for nearly 60 years and guess what guys I am still alive and kicking. If it was so poisonous no one would brush their teeth with it. Sounds to me your anti science is just plain wrong.
