Fisherman bitten by Mako

A Coromandel fisherman bit off more than he could chew after he landed a 1.5m Mako shark.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the seaside town of Tairua after the man in his 30's was bitten by the shark on Monday afternoon.

Communications advisor Kerrie Spicer says the Mako had been thrashing wildly on the deck of the boat and caused lacerations to his foot.

'The patient was transferred from the boat at the marina into an ambulance, which was then transported to the landing area in Tairua,” she says.

The rescue helicopter's on-board paramedics treated the man before airlifting the patient to Middlemore Hospital in a moderate condition.

What about the shark?

Any concern for the shark's welfare? I imagine if the brave fisherman had a hook in his mouth he might have been thrashing about on a deck too.

Exactly right , last two comments. Shark would have suffered enough before landed on the boat, what did the fisherman think he was going to do with it anyway. Leave them alone, only catch what your family can eat.
