A 12-year-old girl has a suspected neck injury after falling from her horse on Matakana Island.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the island yesterday afternoon after the girl fell from her horse.

Pilot and base manager Liam Brettkelly says the girl also sustained leg injuries.

'She was tended to by the Matakana Island first responders, then the helicopter medic stabilised her injuries before she was flown to Tauranga Hospital for treatment.

'The rescue helicopter was tasked because of the quick and easy access to hospital it provides those who are sick or injured on the island.”
