A person is dead and two more badly injured after a collision between a truck and a car on State Highway 2, near its intersection with State Highway 25.

The crash scene has caused a blockage on the road and there is a detour in place using Steen Road to bypass it.

Steen Road has a one lane bridge on it so police are anticipating heavy traffic congestion there.

Police suggest motorists take a wider detour from State Highway 2 at Mangatawhiri using Mangatangi Road, Miranda Road, and on to State Highway 25.

Police and other emergency services are at the scene of the crash and the serious crash unit is working to determine the cause of the crash.
