Another day – another preventable motor vehicle accident in Tauranga.
The intersection at Spring and Durham streets in the Tauranga CBD was left partially blocked following a two car accident this afternoon at about 3.15pm.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says while an ambulance was dispatched to the scene, there were no injuries as a result of the crash.
'One of the vehicles failed to stop at the stop sign and was struck by another vehicle,” he explains.
'We've had a number of crashes out there this afternoon that were all preventable, all involved people not paying attention.”
Ian is pleading with all Western Bay road users to take extreme care while driving this weekend.
He says the problem is, 'wherever there's a crash there's the potential for serious injury if not worse”.
'People need to focus on what they're doing and apply the basics – drive carefully, keep your speeds down, maintain safe following distances, and drive to the conditions at all times.
'They are all those things that police talk about on a regular basis.”

All those intersections along Durham Street, from Harrington to Spring Streets are suspect. When I drive along Durham Street I have one foot perched over the brake as I have had so many near misses at those intersections.
Right on the money The Sage.......

8 out of 10 do NOT come to a total stop at this intersection in particular, coming up the hill towards Cameron Rd must be a "hangover" from the old "clutch control" days?..and now just can't be bothered considering others in ANY direction. Downhill into town much the same, I'm moving and want to keep doing so, again doesn't matter who has right of way...Stop sign?...bah humbug...no penalties.. she'll be right mate...most times!

There is nothing suspect about the intersections along Durham St. The problem sits fair and square on the driver. As with every intersection in Tauranga it is driver inattention, arrogance and failure to adhere to traffic signs. Plane and simple oh yes you can add cell phone use to that lot also.
What!!!!

You highlight a very common fault with New Zealand drivers. They don't know where the brake is and if they do, they don't use it. There is a mentality that all driving issues can be resolved with the accelerator and more speed. The result being both cars accelerating to a very sudden stop and someone gets a trip in an ambulance. New Zealand trained (Rather untrained) drivers are generally morons.
There...

were LESS accidents when the roads werent even sealed?? The cars have got so much better... and the drivers so much worse. Well said Tia... so true Philip... and HATV, it is not just us here in NZ, you should see some of the mugs on the road in Oz... I am there often and it is scary too... they crash into each other on dual lane highways in the dry... so, yes, we may be bad drivers... but there are worse, believe me. All that is missing is respect and good old, uncommon... common sense. At least no one blamed this one on sunstrike... but I guess it prolly had something to do with it lol
