Camphor tree gets the chop

Tauranga City Council is reporting the large camphor tree on the corner of Willow Street and Hamilton Street is being removed this week.
The tree has created a flooding problem for the Willow Street council building (twice in the last fortnight).

This tree is causing flooding and so is being removed.

Extensive root pruning was required to access and repair the flood damage.

This has affected the health and stability of the tree.

Options are to remove the tree or to conduct reduction work.

Weight and height reduction work would make the tree safe and remedy the flooding issue, but only as an interim solution.

City arborists have concluded that the tree fits council's criteria for urgent removal.

The tree will be replaced by another species, yet to be determined.

remove the tree buildinds and trees dont mix so dont make the same mistake by putting another one there, better idea would be a covered seated corner

There are rules and rules some for TCC some for the rest of us

City arborists are just so unreliable inconsistent suddenly determine this tree which incidentally is regarded as a noxious weed in some overseas countries is not safe yet it has been in current state for years.Draw your own conclusion about this lot and TCC.For heavens sake don't plant a replacement it will be a Norfolk pine or a pohutukawa or some other no no.A covered seating corner get out of it the cost would be $millions.

Nice views ...

While I disagree totally with the staff rational for the tree removal I'm sure nobody can deny the awesome views of the harbour that will result from it's removal. In regards the flooding, TCC has allowed the garden drainage to block and the height of soil to be higher than, and hard up against, the building and it's internal concrete floor! Moisture has rotted the timber bottom framing plate and moisture has entered - not rocket science. Easy to remedy, but hey, the views are to die for (the tree, that is)!

Views vs. Treehugging

Unsure what views you would get as ground floor irrelevant & not sure whether upstairs offices have windows with views in that location.Anyway should have been some judicial pruning over the years that could have opened it up . IN addition the 550 staff should be working not gazing into space. If the Waddell office block that you drivel over is ever erected it will snuff out your views CR Guy -just reflect on that probably give you a bit of shading to be going on with too.

too many trees getting the chop

When I first moved to Tauranga 4 years ago, one of the things that lured me was the attractiveness of the place like the beaches and the tree lined streets. Since then, Fraser St and 15th Ave have lost a multitude of trees, there is talk of felling the pohutukawas on turret rd, then the aspen tree was chopped down and now this camphor tree! When is it going to end? Oh yeah, and TCC are also thinking of getting rid of Frank Syndenham Park!

Location Location

Does the council administration need to be in the CBD on prime real estate? A small retail style outlet in town, with the main building in a commercial area would suffice.

Noxious Weed ( Google it and see)

Hebe >>>>>do not panic TCC Council drones lose virtually no view from the top floor as it stands at present. Not in itself a reason to chop this horrible tree down .Had the thing been properly nurtured by the arborists over the years there would be no dilemma now. QED

Murray you could, with your digger, get in there and with a couple of swipes have that tree gone.clear the blocked drain while your at it. Don't forget the chainsaw so as to chop it up as firewood to keep your good wife warm ova winter. The cost would be a fraction of what the arborcare dude would charge as you could do it in your lunch break.call it exercise. You could then pave the area as one more car park.
