The council's own camphor laurel tree on the corner of Willow and Hamilton streets is being cut down.
Arbour Care's chainsaws were at work this morning, removing the tree which council staff say has created a flooding problem for the Willow Street council building – twice in the last fortnight.
The camphor tree by the Tauranga City Council office is being removed.
Council staff say roots have pierced the reinforced concrete floor of the building, allowing water in.
Councillor Murray Guy doesn't believe that and has found no evidence to support the claims.
'Some water entered the building through rotten timber framing into the carpet,” says Murray.
'But no carpet was lifted, neither were any internal wall boards or skirting removed to ascertain damage to the concrete structure.
'But while I've had informal discussions with staff, they have not been able to provide any actual evidence and a request to the acting CEO Christine Jones got the reply that she had instructed staff not to incur any cost in the provision of any response to my questions.
'None of the questions actually involved any costs, but I do now much better relate to those residents who from time to time make requests of staff and feel that perhaps they are not getting an appropriate response particularly one that they are entitled to.
'The whole process has totally disappointed me and I'm really quite sad about it.”
He's also got issues with the process used to remove the tree.
'The council enjoyed advantages that those in the wider community who have issues with trees aren't able to enjoy,” says Murray.
He believes the tree could quite easily have been managed.

Who Pays the CEO

I believe Murray as an elected member of council is entitled to get information and if he is being blocked by the acting CEO something needs to be done about it. Murray do not give, too late for the tree but you and others on the council need to get answers for the ratepayers, after all we pay the workers.

Its just a tree. Plant another one. Maybe a more attractive one at that. Do you think it was cut down for the fun of it? move on! this is a stupid debate, no one benefits from dwelling on this rubbish.

Yeah baby about time, but of course this will be the prelude to a complete rebuild of the Council chambers as there is now reported to be a crack (maybe) in one corner of it all, maybe shifting to Chappel Street is more likely than we thought?

Keep the tree and reduce the council numbers so it fits in a smaller building.

Tree is not the issue here. What basis did Council have to justify the trees' removal just lay it all out there for the public to see.If TCC don't then everyone will know the reports and documents do not exist and TCC have not been upfront.I am from Texas so ya gotta show me.

What's the truth about the condition of the TCC tree, Where are the independent arborists reports Emails and any other correspondence for public to look at ? The usual case of no transparency so far.

You are correct about the informaiton and who is elected etc, however you overlooked one single point, that staff make the decisions, they let us know what they want us to make decisions on and they are very helpful with that because they let us know what the best decision is that they want us to vote for.

Seems obvious that the last level of the decision making process is superfluous.

I am confused Is the Rat in the tree, the council or an email? Even if the rat is found and it is transparent, how will we be able to see it?

Looks like TCC is 'on a run' of cutting the bigger trees down to size, like down to ground level then apply the stump grinder so as nothing is left but saw dust. There is as message somewhere in that for sure.
Cr Guy is what you say 'true'?

If so it appears there could be some Power & Control issues? A bureaucrat (temp CEO paid by us) that hides behind a desk 'refuse's' to give the ratepayers elected member information!! Murray do you and your fellow councillors ensure staff get appropriate training in public relations, customer service & their in house duties? Are they aware of why we employ them?? Is the Mayor aware of how you have been treated Murray? If not why not? If yes what was his response? Something that is becoming very very apparent is the 'refusal?' of council employees to provide information required by ratepayers and others.Murray please have the courtesy to reply here for us that are concerned. Totally unacceptable in my opinion. Hence the reason for "Citizens Monitoring Council"
Nigel Barker asks ...

Elected members technically have no input or direct influence in regard specific staff training. We can only put words in to policies that talk of 'meaningful consultation, respect' etc. Application and monitoring of the policy is the responsibility of the CEO, I would well guess, in cahoots with the Mayor ... My request for basic info had all elected members copied in the email, likewise the Acting CEO's response ... There has been no response from the Mayor. Respect for elected members is very much determined and applied selectively on an individual basis. There is nothing a concerned member can do without majority support from his/her peers. Perhaps I should put in an 'official request for information' under the Official information Act, mindful that Council has a policy of charging for this after the first hour. I will be asking for clarity in regard a CEO's ability to fob of at will a councillor.
Then go to the people Murray

Time for a good old fashion riot in the streets if thats the case Murray. I dont always support your ideas But wil;l support your and therefore our right to know what the hell TCC is upto in OUR City. Time to set up an email support account at TCC let the people email in their thoughts so at election time we know very clearly who keet an ear open to the rate payer
All fine and Good

Keeping an ear open, but if it goes in and comes straight out the other side , how are you going to know?

I am with Tony and the others. What are you 'as a Councillor', elected by the people, going to do about this? With the CEO treating an elected member like that imagine for a moment how it is for the 'people'. Maybe you can well understand why many ratepayers are becoming very disgruntled and in a number of cases quite angry. Are you and other Councillors aware of the amount of written requests for info, that are ignored? And you wonder why your 'people' get agitated with TCC? Why the'people'are fast loosing confidence in Council. The attitude you have described is also experienced by Ratepayers Murray. How does that sit with Council? "Citizens Monitoring Council"

Let's have it out in the open where are the written reports assessments etc. regarding the tree. Why won't TCC release them.If people want a good laugh try requesting these and see what excuses the TCC bureaucrats come up with for not doing so.You will be amazed by the ingenuity employed
