Musical journey through time

A concert of classic works that span four centuries and showcases the development of music from Renaissance through to Contemporary is taking place this month.

Bay of Plenty Symphonia is proud to present Time Travels at St Mary's Church on the corner of Cameron Road and Elizabeth Street on Sunday, July 17.

The programme features eight works by Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Saint Saens, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Shostakovich and Paert, and will be performed in chronological order of composition.

'This delightful programme will be a glimpse into musical history, with pieces that have truly stood the test of time,” says musical director Justus Rozemond.

Opening the show will be 17th century composer Monteverdi's colourful ‘Overture L'Orfeo', a jubilant piece which also marks the birth of the orchestra. It then progresses on to 18th century with Bach's Suite No 3, a concerto composed by Vivaldi, and Mozart's Symphony 26.

The 19th century then takes centre stage with a Beethoven overture and Saint Saens' ‘Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso' before the concert is brought to a close with 20th century composers Shostakovich's ‘Hamlet' and Paert's ‘Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten'.

Time Travels will also feature Kiwi violinist Benjamin Morrison, who regularly performs with the Vienna Philharmonic, who'll be performing twice during the concert.

'Benjamin is the leading Kiwi violinist of his generation and will perform during the Vivaldi concerto in the first half, and Saint Saens' ‘Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso' in the second.

'It will be a treat to hear with Benjamin's masterful violin expertise,” says Justus.

Bay of Plenty Symphonia presents Time Travels with guest conductor Steffan Sinclair and violinist Benjamin Morrison at St Mary's Church on Sunday, July 17, from 3.30 pm. For more information and tickets visit: www.bopsymphonia.org.nz
