A truck also had to be removed from the side of the highway after sliding off the road in this morning's flooding.

Earlier:

State Highway 2, north of Katikati, is closed due to flooding.

The road is closed between Philip Walter Drive and Lindemann Road due to flooding, says a statement from the NZTA.

'Water levels from the rising tide on Uretara Stream are going over the bridge and will continue to rise as high tide is at 9am.

'Motorists are advised to avoid the area as there are currently no available diversions and there will be delays into the late morning.”

Police ask people to please drive carefully and patiently in these weather conditions.

State Highway 25A just east of Kopu is also closed due to a slip.

A severe weather watch remains in place for the region as a large low pressure system moves down the North Island.
