Tussle for top spot continues

There is starting to be some urgency at the top of the table in the Seeka KI Western BOP Championship with just the top two teams to contest the Combined Cup on June 25.

While Matakana Island possesses an unbeaten title at the top of the points table, there is just three points back to Mount Maunganui and Arataki, which sit in second equal position on the points ladder.

The big match-up this weekend will see the two sides, which currently share second place, go head to head at Blake Park.

Near neighbours Mount Maunganui and Arataki share a rivalry that dates back four decades with bragging rights on the line along with outright second place in the competition standings.

In other games, Matakana Island will defend the Hardy Rosebowl (Western BOP Challenge trophy) for the fifth successive time since taking the challenge prize from Judea on the opening day of the season.

A redraw of the competition after round two has resulted in the island team and Judea meeting for the second time in the championship title race.

This time Matakana Island will travel to Maharaia Winiata Park to take on their long time rivals.

Katikati, which rounds out the top four, impressed their loyal band of supporters last weekend, when they despatched Eastern Districts 38-3.

This Saturday they should pick up another win when they meet Greerton Marist at Greerton Park.

Papamoa is likely to be too strong for Rangiuru at Gordon Spratt Reserve – with Eastern Districts needing to defeat Tauranga Sports to keep its Baywide playoff aspirations alive.
