Australia closing in on test win

New Zealand won the mixed fours and drew the women's singles and mixed eight-bowl pairs and won the men's and women's pairs.

Lisa White, Upper Hutt Valley, was one of the stars for New Zealand. In her singles match against Monika Korn, New South Wales she played inspired bowls to recover from a 9-15 deficit after 20 ends of the 25 end game to score a two and four singles to draw 15-15. She held the win on the last end but Korn drew second shot to tie the match. White then combined with Fiona Wilson, Tauranga in the women's pairs against Korn and Julie Zaporozec to win another very close encounter 19-18. New Zealand led 19-16 going into the final end. On this end Australia scored two shots with New Zealand securing the win.

In the men's singles Chris Dudman from Tasmania turned the tables on Grant l'Ami, Taranaki today to win 24-20, l'Ami had won the first encounter yesterday. The scores were level 17-17 after 21 ends but l'Ami killed the jack on the 22nd end of the 25 end game and then dropped a three for Dudman to score six on this end under the scoring for International matches to break the deadlock. Dudman went on to win 24-20. However in the afternoon l'Ami with his partner Ashley Diamond from Canterbury had a convincing 22-10 win in the men's pairs against Tony Simpson and Arthur Finch.

New Zealand's Simon Thomas, Grant Rayner, Julie Thomas and Gina Owen won the mixed fours against Ian Ogilvie, Rodney Wilson, Julie Zaporozec and Barbara Hill, Australia 11-8 over 18 ends. Australia led 8-5 after 11 ends but that was the end of their scoring as New Zealand scored two singles, then had a drawn end followed by four more singles to win a very close encounter 11-8. However in the mixed six-bowl pairs Simon and Julie Thomas went down in dramatic fashion 20-21 in the six-bowl mixed pairs against Ian Ogilvie and Barbara Hill from New South Wales. New Zealand led 17-7 after thirteen ends of the 21 end game but then dropped five shots. They scored a single and a two to lead 20-12 after 16 ends. He drove at the head but was unable to secure the shot Australia winning 21-20.
