Top and bottom to clash today

It's a match-up likened to David versus Goliath when Whakatāne High School takes on Western Heights High School this weekend.

The Bethlehem Coach Lines feature match will be played out on the No.1 field at Whakatāne High School on Saturday, with kick-off at 12pm.

Bay of Plenty Rugby Union secondary schools manager Ian Parata says Whakatāne have yet to post a win this season and have struggled to put their best team on the paddock due to injury and illness.

But Western Heights have a squad that prepared well for a preseason tournament in Malaysia and are at their peak of fitness and conditioning.

'With the return of David Brady to the front row and Daniel Teepa in solid form in the midfield Whakatāne have a team who can compete but it will be their fitness that will determine the final outcome for the Whakatane team,” says Ian.

'Western Heights will need to continue building momentum with their next two games being against teams in the top four. Playing the bottom placed team in the lead up creates challenges for the Greg Smith coached team not too become complacent.”

For a large contingent of Bay of Plenty age grade representative players, Saturday's game will be their last chance to impress selectors before the representative teams are named next week.

'Expect the likes of Brodie Wood and Taylor Soutar to feature in what may become a one sided affair,” says Ian.
