Schools competition tight

Western Heights surged to the top of the BOP Polytechnic Secondary Schools First XV Division One competition on Saturday when they defeated John Paul College 33-5.

Western Heights management reported that it was another strong performance by their forward pack, however, they were made to work hard by a determined JPC side.

The Western Heights first five, Brooke Amon, controlled the game with accurate positional kicking and a staunch defensive performance.

Jordan Ngmata-Poi has picked up where he left off last season with outstanding leadership and positive communication and decision-making.

Brooke Amon scored two tries with Vernon Thompson, Jordon Fiola and Tawhiao Morrison also touching the ball down.

Rotorua Boys' High School made its season entrance into the division one competition with a decisive victory and a narrow loss. The first XV had a good hit-out against Te Puke High School, who battled to the last whistle.

Mason Walker led Rotorua Boys' try scoring efforts with two touchdowns, with Joeli Nagera, Richie Megaw, Shaquille Stone, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, Isaac Te Aute, Teimana Harrison, Timoti Marr and Ryubyn Vaipo all scoring tries. Tatsuya Fukuzaki added six conversions in the 67-7 victory.

Opotiki College posted its second victory (from two games) when they won a real arm wrestle with the Rotorua Boys' seconds in the Eastern Bay. There was little between the two sides throughout, with Opotiki getting home 10-7 in a battle of attrition.

Otumoetai College, Trident High School and Bethlehem College, all sit on top of the division two points ladder after victories on the weekend.

Otumoetai prevailed against a strong challenge from Reporoa College in Reporoa winning 30-15, with Trident defeating Katikati College 57-27 in a high scoring encounter.

Bethlehem had a good battle with Whakatane High School emerging with a 29-19 victory, with Taupo's Tauhara College defeating Mount Maunganui College 28-12.

Taupo Nui A Tia lead the Division Three ranks after a solid 36-12 win over Edgecumbe College, with Rotorua Boys thirds and Aqunias College also posting victories.

Next Saturday all eight division one teams will be in action. Western Heights will place its unbeaten record on the line against Tauranga Boys' first team, while Opotiki College has a similarly tough challenge facing Rotorua Boys' first XV.
