Tauranga Boys’ post a warning

Tauranga Boys' College first XV posted a warning to the other contenders in the BOP Polytechnic Secondary School division one competition when they posted a comprehensive victory against Western Heights High School.


Western Heights, which had won its first two competition encounters, started the game at pace with Jacob Unawai crossing for the first try of the match.

A strong forward performance by the Rotorua school in the first half, saw Tauranga Boys' take a relatively narrow 14-5 advantage into the halftime break. Tauranga number 8 Jayden Tane grabbed his side's first two touchdowns.

Tauranga Boys' upped the ante in the second spell with some slick passing to run in a further five tries with bustling prop Carlin Tata crossing twice in the 47-5 victory. Ryan Hayes, George Honey and Wemin Kapia also posted five points apiece.

Western Heights' management singled out the performances of Evan Grooves and Tawhiao Morrison, with another grand leadership contribution from Jordan Ngamata-Poi in post match commendations.

Rua Malcolm was adjudged the Tauranga player of the day.

While Rotorua Boys' first XV picked up the points when Opotiki College were forced to default – their second XV had a real battle before taking a 13-8 win over Te Puke High.

The Western Bay school gave plenty of cheek forcing a number of errors, before Rotorua Boys' prevailed. A try to Kuhukuhu Hauiti and two penalties and a conversion to Cody Fell accounted for the Rotorua team's points.

Tauranga Boys' made it two wins for the day when their second XV defeated John Paul College 21-17 in a rousing contest at John Paul College.

Trident High School and Bethlehem College continued with their unbeaten run in division two to continue to lead the standings. Trident just got past Otumoetai College 10-6, with Bethlehem providing Tauhara College with their first loss winning 15-8.

Katikati College won a high scoring game with Reporoa College posting a 38-29 win, with Mount Maunganui running away from Whakatane 40-15.

In division three Taupo Nui A Tia posted their third successive victory defeating Aquinas College 40-13, Edgecumbe got past Rotorua Lakes 17-12, with Rotorua Boys' thirds storming away from Rangitahi 79-0.
