One Tauranga starter

Tauranga's Lorraine Phipps is the only starter in the North Island Indoor Bowls Academy Team from the Bay of Plenty named to compete for the Sam Henderson Memorial Trophy.

The North Island Academy team will be captained by Jason Parker from Counties who was in the runner-up fours team at the national championships last year along with Carl Te Wharau, who comes into the team for the first time.

Jason Moore, Horowhenua, skipped the winning four last year and will skip the men's four with North Taranaki's Mark Ridley at three, Shaun Blackbourn, Waikato, at two and Te Wharau at lead.

Parker is in the middle of the men's triple which is skipped by Kerrin Fremlin, Auckland, with the New Zealand Secondary Schools Singles champion Kyle Peters as the lead. Joseph Zino, Hutt Valley, will play the men's singles for the North Island after having done this for the southern zone last year. But an AGM decision moved that the Academy event be North vs South hence the change.

In the men's pairs, Blake Signal, Upper Hutt Valley, will partner Avon Compton, North Wellington.

Jessie Moffat, North Wellington, will represent the North Island Academy in the women's singles with Karen Cuming, Horowhenua, and Fiona Anderson combining in the women's pairs. Michelle Watt, Taranaki, and Lorraine Phipps, Tauranga, who were in the mixed fours champion team last year will play two and lead in the women's four with Jenny Stockford, Auckland, as skip and Denise Clarkson who was in the champion four in 2009 at three. The women's triple is Sharon Peters, North Harbour, Helen Burnley, Hutt Valley, and Trudy Watson, Northland.

The South Island Academy will be captained by the experienced Mark Keen who won the Henselite Champion of Champions singles last year. He will skip the men's four with Ross Garner from Otago at three. Garner holds three Welch Trophy titles, Stephen Preddy, South Otago, who slots in as the two has come through the junior ranks. He was runner up in the junior singles in 2002. Lindsay McCaughan, South Otago, will lead. Chris Matthews, Canterbury, who won the national singles in 2008 will play the men's singles while Robert Wilson, South Otago, who was third equal in the singles in 2010 will skip the pairs with Neil Inglis, Canterbury, as lead. Ken Mackenzie and Matthew Bassett, Ashburton, who were in the runner up team in the triples last year combine with Graeme Chapman also from Ashburton in the men's triple. Bassett is another junior player who is making a name for himself.

The North vs South clash will take place at the Lion Foundation National Indoor Bowls Championships at the Te Rauparaha Arena, Porirua, on Wednesday, June 15 at 2.30pm.
