Rotorua Boys’ upsets Western Heights

The surprise of the latest Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Secondary School first XV competition round came in the midweek match-up between Rotorua Boys' seconds and Western Heights.

The Rotorua Boys' second XV showed that it will be a force to be reckoned with in their coming assignments when they posted a satisfying 37-nil win over the one of the school's archrivals.

After leading 13-0 at the break, Rotorua went up several gears to run in four further tries with winger Phillip Togotogorua using his pace to run away from the opposition to touch the ball down.

In the other midweek encounter, the Rotorua Boys' first XV ran in 12 unanswered tries to post an 80-9 victory, over John Paul College.

Mason Walker starred for the winners, with a trifecta of touchdowns built upon electric pace and elusive running.

The JPC points came from three penalty goals in a game that was played in good spirit by both sides.

While Tauranga Boys' College posted a solid 41-7 win against Opotiki College, the final scoreline didn't tell the tale of a fired up first half performance from the Eastern Bay team.

Leading 17-0 at halftime, the visitors put on the afterburner in the second spell to run in a further four tries. Tauranga player of the match, Carlin Tata, displayed strong ball carrying skills, with Te Aihe Toma converting all six Tauranga tries.

The other surprise in the top echelon was provided by Te Puke High School, which grabbed its first victory of the season with a convincing 32-5 win over Tauranga Boys' Two.

The eight division two teams are chasing just two places in the division one second round championship. Bethlehem College kept its top grade aspirations well and truly alive on Saturday, when it defeated Katikati College 43-19 in an entertaining display.

Katikati opened the scoring with prop Kemble Frost crashing over from five metres out. Bethlehem quickly regathered with tries awarded to Mark Palmer, Caleb Milson and Tim Richards, which saw Bethlehem lead 22-5 after 40 minutes.

Tries to Kahu Craig-Runga and Caleb Williams put Katikati back in the encounter before Ben McBride, Cory Seator and Michel Booth crossed for Bethlehem touchdowns.

Jared McNaughton had a good day with the boot converting six of the Bethlehem tries.

Trident High School has also retained its unbeaten record after defeating Whakatane High School 22-3 in a Eastern Bay local derby, while Otumoetai College remained in contention with a hard fought 17-0 win over Mount Maunganui College.
