Tauranga City Aquatics Ltd CEO Tania Delahunty says it will be some days before it is known how long repairs to the Mount Maunganui Hot Pools are going to take.
The pool, which was losing between 40,000-50,000 litres a day, has been drained and a repair plan is being organised.
Mount Maunganui Hot Pools are closed to allow for repair works.
'We won't be excavating until we know what we will be excavating, so it's done in a structured manner,” says Tania.
'We'll know more tomorrow about the time tabling, but excavation is probably not going to start until next week.”
The pool concerned is the active pool; the large one nearest Adams Avenue.
![]() Kevin Akroyd was a people's champion in drawing attention to the inconsistent temperatures of the hot pools. |
The issue was first flagged by a regular customer, Kevin Akroyd, who pointed out that the pool temperatures as advertised were incorrect according to readings he took in the pool with his own thermometer.
The issue with Kevin was where the temperature was being taken from, says Tania.
'We've had issues with the pool temperatures for a while now being inconsistent and we struggled to keep them consistent.
'During summer time the weather's warmer; there's a lot less issues with it and what we have also found too is some of the probes sitting in the balance tank and around the pool were proving difficult to calibrate,
'It was just a bit of a debate with Kevin – we don't want to get into that.
'We have rectified it now, but we have never denied the fact that we have had issues with consistent hot water.”
The facility was built in 1989, and there was one meter – and the sea intake.
The hot pools run off sea water that is passed through heat exchangers that heat the water using the original natural hot salt water spring.
TCAL installed meters on the two big pools and that was when they identified that there was a leak, says Tania.
The only major closure the facility's ever had was in 2002-03 when the pools were tiled.
Other than that it only ever closes for four or five days annually, which doesn't allow for a lot of major works, says Tania.
'You don't dig up the concourse every couple of years to look at the pipes.
'When the ground's open and the pipes are exposed, we are going to invite the media down to have a look at what causes this and why we have got a problem and why we proposed the redevelopment,” says Tania.

Took Long Enough

Kevin has obviously making this noise about temperature readings for a while and it was only when a meeting was called did action take place. The days when the Council themselves was fully responsible saw more action sooner and facilities in Tauranga were kept up to date. Remember working with Bill Turner to check on best fields for rugby etc in a very wet winter, few grissles from some clubs until they realised what was happening. The same needs to be done for a lot of our facilities. The ratepayers own, the Councillors are our representatives they take full ownership, forget about these ad hoc bodies and get on with it. Too much money been spent on non related groups. A clean sweep is needed now rather than later.
Redevelopment?

So Tania Delahunty wants to "invite the media down to have a look at what causes this and why we have got a problem and why we proposed the redevelopment,” - I would challenge Ms Delahunty to come forward now and tell us how the proposed Cultural Centre and Massage Facilities are going to fix the problems with the pipes.

Everything was fine according to TCAL until they were put on the mat.Now we get an admission Mount Hot pools losing 40000 to 50000 litres per day.TCAL is running around like a headless chook looking for a needle in a haystack.I for one have no confidence in TCALs ability to deal with the problem or to remedy it.The little tete tetes being organised don't inspire confidence.
WHAT PLANNED DIG ?
Posted on 01-06-2011 23:05 | By RASPUTIN
It is more in the likes of a "Mystery dig" the mystery being all about who will find the pipes of unknown location first, only answer is to start digging like rabbits, head down and all that so see what can be found. HELPFUL for today:- when you are digging and there is a wet warm sensation then you know you are close to the leaky pipes that are making hte mess. Dont get to close though you may well be overwhelmed by the sudden rush of steamy water released from 12-18 months of spillage.
So now the money...

... (or at least some of it) that was proposed to be spent on creating a luxurious centre for poor tired businessmen (save the drive to Rotorua) can be spent on actually fixing the functionality of the hot pools. What a lucky escape we all had! Imagine if the proposed project had proceeded and THEN it came to light that the facility was fundamentally flawed... Kevin Ackroyd deserves commendation for raising something that the people who SHOULD have raised it, conveniently ignored. Never mind showing the media some rusty pipes to deflect attention from the real issues: 1. Why wasn't Kevin's contention taken seriously and checked out when he first reported it? 2. Why wasn't proper maintenance (and/or monitoring) being done to prevent the problem in the first place? 3. Why was Ms Delahunty more cocerned with getting a multi-million dollar redevelopment going than in making sure the facility was sound in the first place? Certainly you can't rip out the flooring every year in order to check pipes, but you CAN keep a close eye on "indicators" like temperature and metering to ensure that everything is running properly. Now that the flooring DOES have to be ripped up, perhaps some thought can be given to ensuring that better information and access is available in future. The Romans built baths with underfloor access thousands of years ago; is it beyond us in this day and age? 2.
Shame on you Tania

Shame you didn't want to as transparent about your building Tania! How you keep your job is beyond most ratepayers in this town. You have neglected the most fundemental part of your job. Quote from David Stewart 'I think there are a number of occasions that have arisen over the months where at the end of the day our aquatic facilities are community assets, and I think TCAL is wise to listen to those in the community and what they are saying. 'These are community facilities and community people should have their say about what's going on there and not be brushed off.” This from one of your board collegues, kinda says it all really!! Well done Kevin, you achieved what TCAL would not and their salaries run to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Interesting that the Sun Live reports today (http://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/13393-pool-whipping-boy-resigns.html) that Tauranga City Aquatics Limited director, Deputy Mayor David Stewart, has resigned from the board, saying his position has become untenable. No s#!$ Sherlock! Yes, the Romans built better facilities 2000 years ago but they had also a very short tolerance span for parasites of the public good. David Stewart (and some others) is just lucky he's not living 2000 years ago. Or in some other place of the world. SpeakUp -Citizens Monitoring Council-

The salaries are around $3.5 million a year excluding the willy wofflers paid direct out of council for "planning this mess at the "COLD POOLS" those paristies get about another $300-400,000 a year.
What a lot of stupid rubbish

these TCC and TCAL wofters are talking. Let it be user pays bloody simple really. Correct me if I am wrong but I do recall seeing other hot pools in Tauranga. OOOO silly me ... they are privately owned. K.I.S.S. = keep it simple stupid comes to mind. It is the days of user pays and this is sure a great place to start. Tell you what Stu .. oops Mr Mayor I will get a group of responsible successful local business owners together and put a contract to you that will run the Mount Luke Warm Pools with a minimum saving of 40% on just admin and wages PA. As always Stu I don't expect you respond cos that would be below you aye?? Just not your style to associate with the lower class. Imagine one of your rate paying subjects achieving any savings let alone that much.Citizens Monitoring Council

Hope everybody realises that the 3 TCC Councillors that live locally in MOUNT MAUNGANUI viz.CRS MOULTRIE DM STEWART & CURACH seemingly couldn't be bothered turning up to the AKROYD meeting last Sunday on the HOTPOOLS problems .Tells a story and they might just be digging holes for themselves in the future.

SHOCKING MESS HERE

Is this what we all unwillingly pay for? The level of competence here mystifies me, such a simple thing as loose 40-50,000 litres of "heated" water a day and "no one knows ..." what is going on, why, where or when. That is indeed PROVEN LEADERSHIP!
