Punching in for SBW fight

Two Tauranga boxers, Gunnar Jackson and David Aloua-Rogers, are on the undercard for the Sonny Bill Williams Fight for Christchurch this weekend.

It is a big step forward for Gunnar, who boxes out of the Tauranga Boxing Club gym, in his professional career.

David Aloua Rogers has his second pro fight this weekend on the SBW undercard.

The Tauranga pro has come a long way since his entrance into the paid ranks just over 12 months ago.

Just a solitary loss stains his nine-fight record since making his pro debut.

Six wins and two draws against highly credible opponents tell the tale of a fighter who is being talked about by boxing critics as a rising prospect.

A draw on the David Tua undercard in March against Samoan star Afakasi Faumuina made many promoters sit up and take notice of his ability.

On Sunday, Gunnar has a good opportunity to again impress in front of a large crowd.

He will step into the ring against a more experienced opponent there when he faces off against Nuisila Seiulu.

Victory on the SBW show is likely to ensure that Gunnar is headed for a showdown for the New Zealand Super Middleweight Championship later in the year.

Another Tauranga fighter on the SBW undercard is former New Zealand Amateur Heavyweight champion Dave Aloua-Rogers.

This is his second pro bout and he is expected to have little trouble with Henry Tani to notch his second professional victory.

Formerly trained at the Tauranga Boxing Club by head coach Chris Walker, David is now fighting out of the well respected Tony Mundine gym in Sydney.

In other Tauranga Boxing Club news, Vicki Oborn won the Women's Novice Light Heavyweight title at the Golden Gloves held in Taupo last weekend.

The local pugilist who was boxing in just her second fight and now has a two from two win record along with a Golden Gloves title.
