There were two parts to today's official opening of the Pyes Pa Bypass; a dawn ceremony, and the official speeches held in a marquee on the Kennedy Road roundabout.
The dawn ceremony was the unveiling of a ceremonial sternpost of the Takitimu Waka at the roundabout joining the bypass to the Pyes Pa Road. The anchor stone of the waka lies at the Tauranga end of the harbour link.
An explanation of the meaning of the taurapa, and the hoikio figure carved upon it was given by Kaumatua Peri Kohu, who opened the mid morning formalities in the marquee.
Transport Minister Steven Joyce, opened the speeches, followed by the mayors Stuart Crosby, Tauranga and Ross Paterson, Western Bay of Plenty. The opening was also attended by local MPs Simon Bridges, Tony Ryall and Todd McClay from Rotorua.
Regional council mayor John Cronin also attended, along with various councillors.
The 4.5km bypass links SH 36 with Route K providing a quicker route to the port, and bypassing the increasingly urban section of Pyes Pa road, which reverts to a local road today following the opening of the new highway section.
The Pyes Pa road, now State Highway 36, carried 3,500 vehicles a day in 2005, says Ross Paterson. Today that volume is 7,300 a day and expected to continue growing as more heavy traffic takes advantage of the improvements.
Steven spoke about the importance of an efficient strategic roading network to keep Tauranga growing, and commended the partnerships in the Western Bay of Plenty between the regional territorial authorities, the New Zealand Transport Agency and organisations like Priority One.
'Working together with national and local government agencies is what actually gets things done,” says Steven.
After the speeches the crowd made their way out onto the roadway for a joint ribbon cutting ceremony.
The road was opened to traffic as soon as the marquee was struck.

Pyes Pa Road

We think it's a real shame that heavy traffic are allowed to use the Pyes Pa Road at all, surely it would be better and safer if they were banned from this road altogether so it becomes a viable safe trip between Tauranga and Rotorua
It they wanted it safe

I agree, but the trucks like it too.
And Who Wants a Speedster
Posted on 04-06-2011 15:36 | By tabatha
The idea of this highway is to try and reduce and spread more even traffic flows. Get rid of heavy traffic and the speedsters come out and more accidents again. It is time people learned to respect each other on the road and share. Selfish actions go unrewarded.

I have to agree with Kapa. Truckies should be made to stick to the main highways. Empty logging trucks are the worst speeders. All trucks need to be banned from using Cambridge-Moffat Roads. There is no need for them to usethese roads. They have the express way or the main state highways. By Cherrypie
Trucks first

The Pyes Pa road had/has as a primary function the servicing of the forestry and farming blocks. This hasn't changed. What has changed is that the road has been sealed, re-branded a highway, attracting greater truck numbers, cars and motor-homes, cyclists looking to take in the breathtaking scenery and reduced travel times between Tauranga and Rotorua.
Blissful ignorance by all the usual suspects

There we have it Transport Minister Steven Joyce on behalf of NZTA Cronin as chairman Bay Regional Council Crosby as mayor TCC and Paterson mayor WBDC plus 3 local MPs Bridges Ryall and McClay along with the ceremonial Taurapa. Not one of them appear the slightest bit aware of and probably could not care less about the magnitude of the huge overspending on this dog of a completely unnecessary roading project. This big juicy lemon of only 4.5km has cost $10000 per meter to build. An unbelievable waste of taxpayer money. !!!!!!!! This is what your local and national politicians do to you and you wonder why NZ racks up $15 Billion more debt every year.Wonder no more.
Total waste of money

Totally agree with heebegeeies....So much money wasted... Just been looking at Simon Bridges Face Book site and he is sooooo excited about it shortening the trip between here and Rotorua and boasting how much it cost like he is a little boy spending money that does not belong to him...lets see how many people actually use to go to Route K, which already has it's own worries. see link below. http://www.bayofplentytimes.co.nz/local/news/secrecy-over-future-of-route-k/3954447/ I feel the secrecy is that they don't want people to know whats NOT going to happen in stage 4 Welcome Bay who have been waiting way longer than Pyes Pa to have traffic woes corrected.
Shortens the trip for some
Posted on 05-06-2011 11:22 | By Colleen Spiro
It only shortens the trip for people who live at the Lakes OR THOSE WHO CHOOSE to take Route K How many people are going to do that?????
MARQUEE CONSENT ?
Posted on 05-06-2011 11:48 | By MISS ADVENTURE
I wonder if a consent was applied for, approved and issued before it was erected ? Oh the rugby game was posponed becasue of rain ... so don't need one right ? Oh silly me!!!
FIVE MINUTES OF FAME

@ Hebegeebies $30 MILLION LATER ... a cheap price at $10,000/m (Eastern Aertial is $25,000/m to get through the bog, mud and sludge that they then intend to build on ... who needs an earthquake for liquifaction?). The debt of K Road will be significantly incereased by $12.8m and that means the hurdle to now is higher again to avoid loosing even more money, every year!
Ugly fence
Posted on 05-06-2011 13:59 | By nina
The fence with the perspex on top is so ugly. It doesnt even look like its finished. They should have at least continued with the board and batton, I know they are trying to be 21st centry but its just plain ugly.
New road

Nice piece of road and will help to reduce the traffic on Cameron Road also entice more to use Route K.Also with a bit of luck the National Roads Board will take over the funding of Route K which take a burden of the local ratepayers.
whats the point?
Posted on 05-06-2011 20:16 | By mr joyce
they claim that the traffic will be less for the "urban" part of pyes pa rd but surely all that traffic will just travel through The Lakes - a brand new subdivision with housing one side and a school and employment zone on the other. nice to see the photos of all the kids on their bikes but who'll be doing that once all the trucks start chugging through there? i suspect that this was built because 10 years ago someone thought it was a good idea and things have simply been put in place to build it. no one dares question it because they wont get to use the funding elsewhere. funding for this type of thing is always use it or lose it.
LESS TRAFFIC
Posted on 05-06-2011 23:02 | By YOGI BEAR
Cant see that happening, the only reason to go on teh new road is: 1. you want to pay a toll for K Road or 2. you live in The Lakes area (almost none ...) so end result yet another wonderful idea at a cost of mega-millions and well hmmm an interest bill to pay from rates.
@ MR JOYCE
Posted on 06-06-2011 11:46 | By Vomit
There is no point sir, they do it because they can, there is no meaning to it, no purpose. In end result there is another $12.5 million of debt burden to Route K and the TCC ratepayer, the torture does not end ...
TOLLS NEEDED TO TRY TO PAY INTEREST???
Posted on 06-06-2011 13:16 | By WARTS N ALL
Interest on $12.5 million is about $900,000, so that means we need another 2,500 cars a day of the estimated 4,000 a day on Pyes Pa to change over and "PAY". That is not going to happen. K Road is already makes a loss of $1.50 million a year, it does not even pay 1/2 the interest on the debt and the debt is increasing annually, that is all going to get more faster sooner.
MARE CROSBY DOES NOT LOOK HAPPY?
Posted on 07-06-2011 04:09 | By PLONKER
Everyone else does? guess that has sometime to do with the fact that he had to hand over a cheque for $12.5 nillion or something that he does not have, can not pay the interest on and is still bewilderedly wondering how and when Stephen agreed to all of it all ...
