RBHS defeats Tauranga archrival

Rotorua Boys' High School won the battle against archrivals Tauranga Boys' College, when the two schools' first XVs met in the deciding round of the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Secondary Schools competition on Saturday; to make the encounter even more dramatic Super Eight points were on the line.

The annual match-up between the two Bay of Plenty traditional rivals is always a pressure packed affair. After a battle of attrition, the Rotorua forward pack eventually wore down their Tauranga counterparts. After leading 13-3 at the halfway stage, Rotorua Boys' went on to grab a 23-6 victory after what was a particularly hard fought battle.

The Rotorua Boys' touchdowns were scored by Teimana Harrison, Ryubyn Vaipo, Beau Williams with Timoti Marr completing a fine game with the bonus point try.

The Tauranga Boys' points came from two penalty goals to Te Aihe Toma, with Wemin Kapia selected as the Tauranga player of the day.

A 19-3 win to the Rotorua second XV over the Tauranga Boys' seconds, completed a good day for the Rotorua School.

Rotorua made a nervous start to the game but started to assert some authority as the match progressed.

The try of the day was scored by Ethan Brake, who finished a blistering run from Conner Hohepa from inside the Tauranga 22m, chipping it over the last defender for Brake to run onto and complete the movement.

Western Heights High School got its division one campaign back on track, when they defeated Opotiki College 22-10.

It was another fine effort set up by solid forward platform with the front row of Chase Clarke, Ben Le Vailiant and Cory Gamble taking control up front.

Another to shine was Chase Kennedy who produced a outstanding defensive effort from the side of the scrum.

The Western Heights try scorers were Even Grove who dotted down twice, with Damon Clarke also grabbing a try. Ever-reliable kicker Jordan Ngamata-Poi added two conversions and a penalty goal.

In the fourth division one match-up, Te Puke High School posted a 26-8 victory against John Paul College, which included a bonus point for four tries

The top of the table match in division two went right down to the wire before Trident High School sneaked home 17-15, from Bethlehem College in a wet and muddy encounter.

The closeness of the game was shown by the half time scoreline of 10-all.

Trident's touchdowns were awarded to Pryor Collier and Ngaketu Herewini, with Cory Seator crossing for Bethlehem and Jared McNaughton adding a penalty and a conversion.

Bethlehem hit the lead in the second half when Jared McNaughton crossed out wide, however Trident hit back with a converted try with around 15 minutes remaining in the match, to take out the game.

Katikati College went a try-scoring blitz against Whakatane High School winning 45-29 in a high scoring encounter, with Otumoetai College also in good form running away from Tauhara College 40-8.

Taupo Nui A Tai continued to lead the div three standings blitzing Rangitaiki College 84-nil, with Rotorua thirds squeezing home from Aquinas College 22-20, and Tauranga Boys' defeating Rotorua Lakes 32-12.
