Seeka KI comp goes to the wire

The last qualifying round of the Seeka KI Western BOP competition being played today sees teams contesting to the end for the second championship finalist spot.

Mount Maunganui, which sits astride the points table with a five point buffer from Matakana Island is assured of a home semi-final with the real interest in the results of the second and third placed teams.

With just the two top qualifiers contesting the Seek KI Western BOP Championship, where the Combined Cup will be on the line, both Matakana Island and Arataki have a last throw of the dice this weekend.

Matakana Island would appear to be in the box seat with just Greerton Marist standing in its way of contesting the battle for the Combined Cup next weekend.

The island team made all the pace in the local competition from the opening round, until beaten by Mount Maunganui in a titanic battle last Saturday.

However, Greerton Marist has already provided a couple of upsets in the competition. The Greerton second team always enjoy their games, and will want to finish the championship round on a high note.

Arataki has to defeat Eastern Districts at home and then await the results of the game at Greerton Park.

While Eastern Districts has had a roller coaster ride this season, they always play with plenty of pride and passion in front of their supporters at the Paengaroa Domain.

An added intensity in the match-up at the Paengaroa Domain is that Arataki will put the Western Bay of Plenty Challenge prize of the Hardy Rosebowl on the line.

While Mount Maunganui has already booked a home final berth, they could receive a real challenge from Katikati.

The current season is the first time that Katikati has fielded a second senior team for many years with the club's second string having been in good form.

Tauranga Sports will finish in the top four if they can get past Judea at the Tauranga Domain, while Papamoa should account for Te Puke Sports at the Gordon Spratt Reserve.
