The Bay of Plenty Junior Surfing Team secured three finals berths and one title through Whakatāne surfer Jack Lee on the final day of the 2016 National Scholastic Surfing Championships.
Lee won the Under 14 Boys Division on Wednesday and was the form surfer of the three-day event with his smooth style and speed in the small waves at Makorori Beach near Gisborne.

Also placing was Mount Naunganui surfer Lee Ririnui who came third in the U16 Boys Division which was won by Dunedin's Elliot Brown who surfed to the highest heat score of all finals at the event.
While fellow Mount surfer Georgia Wederell also placed third in the final of the U14 Girls Division which was won by Gisbourne surfer Stella Smith.

Despite the Bay team's best efforts their four year reign at the top has come to an end with the Taranaki Junior Surfing Team scoring 17,519 points to claim the 2016 title – the team's first in the event's 27 year history.
Auckland came in second with 14,765 points, in third place was Canterbury with 13,760 points, while the Bay of Plenty finished eighth with 8170 points.
Up until Wednesday, of the 10 regional teams from across New Zealand which compete at the Scholastic Championships, the Bay of Plenty, Coromandel, Waikato, Gisborne, and now Taranaki are the only regions to have ever won the event.
