Western Heights wins co-ed title

While there was just one Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Secondary School Competition division one game played on Saturday, the results from division two saw the six teams to contest the top echelon championship round confirmed.

There was still plenty of attention given by Western Heights to its last encounter of the first round with the co-ed first round honours on the line.

Facing Te Puke High School at its headquarters, the Rotorua visitors received a huge challenge from the fired up home side, with the match finishing in a 17-all draw.

Western Heights team management reported that it was another outstanding forward effort against a spirited and dedicated Te Puke side.

The Western Heights points came from a try apiece to Evan Groves and Tawhiao Morrison, with Jordon Ngamata-Poi converting both tries and adding a penalty goal.

Both teams had their opportunities but strong defensive lines from both sides cancelled out many of the promising attacks.

The division one first round came to an end with Rotorua Boys' first XV winning the crown the previous weekend – with Western Heights winning the co-ed title.

Division two results on Saturday have resulted in Trident High School and Otumoetai College joining defending titleholders Western Heights, Te Puke, Opotiki and John Paul College in the race for the division one championship.

Trident High wrapped up the division two first round title with an unbeaten record when they defeated Mount Maunganui 24-nil.

While the Otumoetai College game with Whakatane High wasn't played because of the weather bomb that hit the Eastern Bay of Plenty, they had accumulated enough points to get past Bethlehem College for the second div one position.

Bethlehem signed off in the div two first stanza with an 18-3 defeat of Reporoa with Tauhara getting past Katikati 15-7.

Taupo Nui A Tia posted a narrow 12-8 win over the Tauranga Boys' thirds to win the division three crown. Edgecumbe College had to settle for a ten all draw with Rotorua Boys', with Rotorua Lakes grabbing their first win with a 12-5 victory over Rangitahi.
