One killed in two truck crash

Police are diverting traffic following a crash between two trucks on SH2, near Pongakawa.

UPDATED: One person has been killed after two trucks crashed on State Highway 2, near BP Pongakawa.

Police have closed the section of the highway and diversion are in place.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Steve Smith says one person is dead and two others have been injured.

"I can't confirm the status of the two people that have been injured. Crews from Maketu and Te Puke were dispatched to the scene.

"Te Puke has since left and Maketu remains at the scene.

Police are diverting traffic, with diversions at Pongakawa School Road if travelling from Tauranga and at Old Coach Road if travelling from Whakatane.

"Motorists should expect significant delays.

"Police ask motorists to avoid the area or delay travel if possible while the crash is cleared."

Reports are coming in of a serious truck crash on State Highway 2, near Pongakawa.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says it appears two trucks have crashed.

"It looked pretty serious."

Police have been called to the scene.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible or expect delays in their travels.
