JC misses out on top 12 berth

Mount Maunganui surfer JC Susan is facing the long road of repechage rounds to make the finals of the 2011 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games being held in Panama.

Like his three Kiwi team mates contesting the open men's division, JC suffered a fourth placing in his heat on Tuesday to be relegated to the repechage rounds.

'It wasn't too hard out there – we just all stuffed up pretty bad,” says JC.

'The waves were good but we picked the wrong ones.”
He is confident that the team will be able to turn its form around when they begin the repechage rounds.

'We are pretty gutted at the moment but we have to wipe that out of our thinking and work toward a good performance tomorrow.”
Kiwis Paige Hareb and Phil Morris have made the cut, however, and moved through to the final round.

Surfing under an injury cloud, Paige eased her way to second place behind Brazilian surfer Silvana Lima who posted an impressive 16.67 point heat total to move through to the quarterfinals.
She posted a 10.0 point total heat score to relegate the Mexican and South African surfers to the repechage rounds.
'It's ok, it felt like a dead leg today but it's getting better, just tight and tender,” says Paige.

'It still feels bad when I'm surfing, I didn't surf my best today, but it wasn't bad enough to keep me out of the water,” added Paige, who relied on pain killers and anti-flam to see her through the day.
With the win, Paige is likely to skip the third day of competition allowing more recovery time before the event heads toward the big match ups.
'I'm hoping I will get a day off tomorrow to give me a good day of rest and then I reckon I'll be closer to 100 percent ready to go again.

'I'm looking forward to my next heat though, with my best friend Sofia from Peru – the waves were pumping today so it should be fun!”
Paige beat Sofia Mulanovich in the final of the 2010 event placing second to Mulanovich's third. Paige will also face off against Kaleigh Gilchrist (USA) and Leilani McGonagle (CRI).
Longboader Phil Morris was the other standout surfer for the Kiwis placing second in his heat.
He scored a 10.70 point heat total to place second behind Piccolo Clemente (Peru) defeating surfers from South Africa and Costa Rica.

He will now face a challenging third round match up against Caio Husadel (BRA), Antoine Delporo (FRA) and Heifara Tahutini (TAH).
