Phelan Cup takes centre stage

While the top four finishers in the Seeka KI Western BOP Championship play a short, sharp round robin format before heading for their respective Baywide playoffs – the remaining seven teams are engaging in the second round of the Seeka KI Western BOP competition for the Phelan Cup.

In the first round, Judea relieved Eastern Districts of the Hardy Rosebowl after ED brought it into the Western BOP second round by way of defeating Arataki two weeks previously.

Today, Judea will put the Western Bay of Plenty Sub-Union Challenge Trophy on the line for the first time when it visits the Gordon Spratt Reserve to play Papamoa.

The two sides bring contrasting histories to the encounter at the Papamoa headquarters. Judea, which celebrated its centenary last year was one of the originals in the (then) Tauranga Rugby Union competitions.

Papamoa has a much shorter history, having been established within the last few decades as the population in Papamoa has exploded.

Katikati laid down the gauntlet to the other Phelan Cup contenders last weekend when it ran over Te Puke Sports by 50+ points.

Today, Katikati meets Te Puna, which has re-entered the second round after missing the first stanza. The game will be played in front of Katikati's vocal supporters at Moore Park.

There should be little between Greerton Marist and Eastern Districts when they meet at Greerton Park.

While Greerton finished well down the ladder in the Western BOP Championship, they never fail to fight to the end.

The highlight for ED was to provide the biggest upset of the local season, when they took the Hardy Rosebowl from Arataki.

Tauranga Sports and Mount Maunganui will provide the curtain raiser to their premier teams' match-up when they meet at the Tauranga Domain in a Merv Scholes Trophy match.
