Judea retains the Hardy Rosebowl

A titanic battle took place in the Seeka KI Western BOP Phelan Cup competition at the weekend when Papamoa squared off against Judea.

Not only were the qualifying points for the second round championship final on the line, but also the Hardy Rosebowl (Western BOP Challenge Trophy) was up for grabs.

In recent seasons, games between the two sides have been close contests with Judea having the wood on their opponents in the last couple of years.

Saturday's match-up was no different with the encounter on the line until the final whistle.

Papamoa opened the scoring when Brad Stewart crashed over for his side's first try.

A try and penalty goal apiece saw Papamoa take a 13-8 lead into the halftime break.

The second half advantage changed several times before an extremely tired but jubilant Judea team walked off the field with a narrow 23-20 victory – and the Hardy Rosebowl still in their possession.

In the only other Phelan Cup result that was posted, Katikati defeated Te Puna who were making their entrance into the second round 101-5 – after Te Puna opened the scoring with the first try of the game.

An absorbing contest took place in the curtain raiser at the Tauranga Domain, where Tauranga Sports and Mount Maunganui battled to a 27-all draw.

Iy's likely that the two teams will meet for the final time this season when they represent the Western Bay of Plenty in the Baywide Reserve Grade playoffs
