Blue and gold brigade finish strongly

The weeklong Steamers camp that was the final step in the team's preparation for the start of the 2011 ITM Cup, ended with a solid victory against the Manawatu Turbos in Palmerston North on Friday afternoon.

Playing into strong breeze in the first half, the Steamers trailed the home side 5-7 at the half way stage of the encounter.

The second half belonged to the Steamers, with the side dominating both possession and territory to run in four further touchdowns. In spite of playing their second match in three days, the Blue and Gold brigade finished strongly to post a solid 33-19 win.

Jamie Nutbrown celebrated his return home to again play in the Steamers strip with a try. Inspirational captain Colin Bourke along with Culum Retallick, Tristan Moran and Sam Cane all dotted the ball down for five points apiece. Chris Noakes kicked three conversions with Dan Waenga nailing a fourth conversion.

Steamers second five Phil Burleigh played a key role in the backline, with Nick McCashin who is another with plenty of Steamers experience also playing with authority. New season recruit Bronson Murray showed that he would be a powerful force in this season's front row with a strong performance.

With the preparatory games completed, the Steamers attention now turns to their first ITM Cup assignment against Counties Manukau in Pukekohe next Sunday (17 July 2011) afternoon.

Result 8 July 2011
