Merv Scholes matches solid

The two Merv Scholes Trophy matches played at the weekend were won in convincing style by the two teams that will represent the Western Bay in the Baywide reserve playoffs in two weeks time.

At Blake Park, Mount Maunganui put its foot to the pedal in the second half against Matakana Island after trailing 13-14 at the halfway stage.

The 48-14 victory showed that the Mount is in tiptop order to defend its Baywide reserve title.

Tauranga Sports, which is likely to meet its Mount Maunganui counterpart at some stage in the Baywide championship also posted a solid victory.

Facing Arataki at the Tauranga Domain, the home side continued its recent run of form winning 31-12.

Judea will continue to defend the Hardy Rosebowl (Western BOP Challenge Trophy) after posting the win points against Te Puke Sports, however, it is unclear whether an official contest took place.

Katikati continues to lead the Phelan Cup points table after defeating Papamoa 18-13, in a close run battle at Moore Park.

With maximum points before the Phelan Cup final on July 23, Katikati look set to host the championship decider.

The Te Puna second senior side, which entered the Phelan Cup competition after sitting on the sideline in the first round of competition, provided further good news for the club on Saturday.

Playing at home they rebounded from a huge loss the previous weekend, to get past Greerton Marist 21-19 in a game that went right down to the wire.
