Merv Scholes winds up

The Merv Scholes Trophy matches in the Seek KI Western Bay of Plenty competitions conclude this week, before the participating sides head for the Baywide playoffs.

Points differentials could decide the short sharp round robin competition as Mount Maunganui and Tauranga Sports, which lead the points tally, battled to a 27-all draw in the first game of the competition.

This Saturday, Tauranga Sports travel to play Matakana Island on the Island, while Arataki hosts Mount Maunganui.

There is plenty in interest in the Phelan Cup in the last round of regular season play with the winners of the two sections meeting in the Phelan Cup Final next weekend.

The competition is played with crossover pools. On Saturday, joint section one leader Katikati will front up at the Paengaroa Domain against Eastern Districts, who are at the top of section two.

Judea, who is tied with Katikati at the top of section one, will return the Hardy Rosebowl (Western BOP Challenge trophy) to their trophy cabinet for the summer break, if they can defeat Te Puna at Maramatanga Park.

One of the real success stories in the Western Bay grassroots rugby competitions has been the Hardy Rosebowl that is up for grabs each week.

Judea began the season back in late March with the challenge prize, only for Matakana Island to grab the trophy with a 39-12 win.

The Islanders repelled six challenges before Arataki relieved Matakana of the trophy, with a narrow 8-5 victory.

The upset of the season came when Eastern Districts who belied their place well down the point's ledger, got past Arataki in another nailbiter winning 12-10.

The following weekend the Hardy Rosebowl changed hands again with Judea defeating ED 32-20.

The third Phelan Cup match-up will see two team off the pace meet at Greerton Park, when Greerton Marist play Te Puke Sports.
