Playing for home finals

Whakarewarewa, which faces fellow Rotorua side Rotoiti at Purenga Park in the Bartercard Baywide Premier title race this weekend will book the fourth semi-final berth if it can topple its archrivals.

With defending champions Tauranga Sports, Mount Maunganui and Te Puke Sports assured of top four finishes to guarantee semi-finals places, the race in the last two weeks for the top three will be to book home semi-finals.

There is a rare intensity in encounters between the two Rotorua sides with their rivalry stretching back many decades. The game will also match up the two leading point scorers in Baywide Premier rugby this season.

Whakarewarewa stalwart Kelly Haimona leads the individual points tally with 158 points.

The ace goal kicker provides Whaka with an extra defensive option with opposition players reluctant to make mistakes in the Whaka half, with Haimona able to convert mistakes into points with his boot.

Flying Rotoiti winger Sikeli Vorenasu who can also double at fullback is a one-man game winner.

The Rotoiti greyhound has dotted down 13 tries this season, and with his successful kicks at goal sits just short of 150 points on the points tally.

Tauranga Sports, which is chasing five successive Baywide Premier crowns, will want to get back to winning form after two defeats in the last two weekends.

Opotiki, which sits mid table will be keen to deliver the defending champions, a third defeat in a row at the Tauranga Domain.

Tauranga Sports first year coach Mike Rogers, who has made the transition from playing in the championship winning side, will ask his troops to dig deep as victory will give his side a home semi-final. Opotiki has made solid progress this season and will be out to finish with a bang in their last two games of the year.

Mount Maunganui coach Marty Bourke, who is another to make the transition from playing to coaching in the last couple of years, needs his side to defeat Whakatane Marist in the Eastern Bay, to remain in contention for a home semi-final. However, standing in the Mount's way are the Eastern Bay representatives, coached by one of the best rugby brains in the country.

Former New Zealand Maori mentor Matt Te Pou will want his side to provide the visitors with an unpleasant memory of defeat when they return home.

Te Puke Sports is the third team fighting to play their first post section game at home and they meet Te Puna this Saturday. While Te Puke will have the home advantage against the side from the extremities of the Western Bay, Te Puna upset Tauranga Sports last weekend to show that they are no easy beats.

While Rangataua have a minute theoretical chance of getting past Whaka for the fourth post section berth, they would need to bank a bonus point in defeating Waikite at Te Ariki Park on Saturday – and then hope that Whaka lose their last two games

The real race in the division one championship is the battle between Marist St Michaels in third place, and Katikati and Ngongotaha who are locked in fourth place on the point's ledger. Marist St Michaels face a stern challenge against Rangiuru, who have posted three wins and a draw from their last four games.

Katikati should beat bottom placed Ruatoki, while Ngongotaha will be favoured to take out the Rotorua local derby with Kahukura.

Competition leaders Te Teko face Paroa, with second placed Greerton Marist travelling to play Reporoa on the Bay of Plenty border.
