Boobs on Bikes opponents are re-energised after Steve Crow's announcement on SunLive of his intention to carry on with his inner city bike ride of bare breasted women.
Tauranga City Councillor Murray Guy says he is calling a public meeting to discuss options, but has yet to set a time or place.
Boobs on Bikes parade in Auckland 2010.
'The next step for Bill Grainger and myself is that we intend taking some form of leadership or coordinating role in doing our level best to enforce the street use bylaws,” says Murray.
'Our next step is to get the word out and identify a time and place to create an opportunity for those who share our sentiments.
'The purpose of the public meeting is to listen to ideas, thoughts and responses from those who share our concerns.”
Bill Grainger says while Steve Crow may claim Boobs on Bikes is defending women's legal right to bare their breasts in public, it is in reality to create publicity for his Erotica Lifestyles Expo, which takes place in Auckland August 5-7.
When it was put to Murray that his opposition to Boobs of Bikes is creating free publicity for Steve Crow, he says as an elected councillor has to uphold the city bylaws.
He can't selectively choose which ones to support and those who voted for him are entitled to know how he sees his job.
'It's no different to if I give my car to my daughter, I need to know she will obey the rules of the land,” says Murray.
He says Boobs on Bikes is a parade intended to raise publicity for a commercial activity and so breaks the city street use bylaw.
Tauranga is one of seven venues on the ‘Boobs on Bikes Tiki Tour' scheduled for Thursday, August 4.
Other venues are Paeroa, Waihi, Katikati, Tauranga, Matamata, Cambridge and Hamilton. Pictured is the planned route through Tauranga.

And I know what I'll be doing next thursday, watching the Boobs on Bikes and hoping for a cold day as well. If Murray ****** Guy and all the self-righteous moral crusaders don't like it then don't go and watch it. I find the excrement pouring out of our elected councilors mouths a lot more offensive than some nicely shaped breasts.

Has Council got a mandate......

... to control or define morality? Clearly not. Public servants, stop wasting our money, go back to your work duties and stick to council core function.
nothing wrong with it

Thought the Councils new approach was to bring vibrancy to the CBD and bring people in to spend money for the poor business owners that have been struggling, restaurant and bars would do a roaring trade get off your moral high horse Guy

Could bs bluetits on bikes if the weather was like it was the other day.Well some of have to work for a living so i wont be there.I wonder if the people who think it is ok would like their daughters or wives to ride down the road showing off their tits.If they do then i am glad i don't know them.
two standards

If a woman walked around town topless for any length of time I suspect she would be escorted off to the Cop Shop for a wee chat and no doubt a following fine. If Boobs on Bikes does it then its ok. That's my objection...not on morality grounds but rather the lack of equality in standards allowed by our city leaders. Should be one standard for all.
Meeting time & venue set

The sponsor of the evening is myself, Cr. Murray Guy with the support of Cr. Bill Grainger. There may be other elected members present. This IS NOT a TCC activity, and the program, input of any person(s) is purely as an individual on their behalf only, unless acknowledged otherwise. This about your elected members as individuals, responding to concerns publically expressed. The community is invited to attend and participate in an open meeting in regard the proposed parade. The venue is the Tauranga City Council Chambers, Willow St, Monday 5.30pm, 1 August. Following an informal mix and mingle (hopefully a nibble) a program of information sharing and discussion will begin at 6pm. The organizers are grateful that the CEO, Mr Ken Peterson, has willingly made available Council (community) facilities. Very much look forward to seeing you, listening to you!
Its good for our city!!

This city needs a boost and boobs on bikes can do this. We are living in the dark ages in this city. Carry on the way it is and we will have no young ones sticking around Tauranga to raise a family. I know im already looking at taking my kids away from here. Its got too boring. Its more of a retirement city, and im not the only person to think this. Do not mean to be rude to those of you who are retired.
ALL THE VIBRANCE BUT ...

There are still no carparks anywhere for anyone, maybe a few "bike" stands would be beneficial?
Don't like = don't go

Much ado about nothing I reckon. I can't be bothered going myself but if others want to, why not let them. I don't think naked boobs are offensive at all. I reckon Murray Guy & Bill Grainger are using this 'crusade' to sneek a peek
What's the issue?

Is it the breaking of a Law which forbids parades to promote a business, or is it because some people find nudity offensive? If Murray Guy is campaigning against the former and has no interest in the latter, then maybe we need to review that Law. If it is just a smokescreen so all the prudes can impose their will on the rest of us, then we are indeed a sad community. Is their any incident on record of anyone being physically harmed by looking at naked female anatomy? Have people had their eyes burned or their retinas detached by the horror of seeing a female breast in public? Personally, I won't be going because I have higher priority things to do, but I would defend to the death the right of those who DO want to go and watch. It's time everyone grew up and accepted this as the bit of fun it is, with all participants perfectly willing to be involved. If you are likely to be offended by it, don't go.

I imagine he might turn the other cheek and get back to the real business of throwing the moneylenders out of the temple and exposing hypocrisy and the pseudo moralistic ravings of modern day Pharisees. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. I think all this publicity is playing into the hands of the promoters. I won't be going to the parade and wouldn't have even known about it but for this.
What is your opinion, Mr. Bridges?
Posted on 29-07-2011 10:57 | By jmows
If this country is serious about combatting family violence, then government should not be supporting or allowing a public event that clearly objectifies and disrespects women. As one poster said - how many of you (even those who claim to support this event) would like to see your daughter participate in the parade? Until society shows more respect for women, and women respect themselves, then violence against women will continue, while people pretend to care. What do you say Mr. Bridges? Do you support Murray Guy in his opposition to this event?

Your comment shows you don't know what you are talking about. Murray Guy is NOT opposed to this on nudity grounds, he is upset because he believes it violates a Council by-Law. Why would you expect Simon Bridges to express an opinion on this? He has much more important things to do and it is not a political issue; it is just a matter of opinion. As for your claim that it "clearly" disrespects women and encourages family violence, where is your evidence? WOMEN are taking part. No-one is using cattle prods on them, they volunteer gladly because it is a laugh and they get paid for it. How is that disrespectful? Instead of trotting out second hand platitudes you have heard someone else say, why don't you sit down and think about it? The fact that YOU wouldn't do something, does not make it wrong for someone else, who does not share your attitude, to do it. Or do you think the World should run according to YOUR viewpoint?

Why do you assume that I am touting something I have heard someone else say? I don't really care why Murray Guy is opposing it, I'm just glad he is. I know that women are participating - that's why I said that women need to respect themselves as well. I wouldn't dream of imposing my values on you or anyone. But why is it ok for this Crow joker to impose his lack of values and his adult entertainment business on the general public? Of course, I won't be attending, so don't argue that I don't have to go...but it defintiely does NOT belong in a public venue, and I believe that most families would agree with me. Why is it that nobody responds that they would be happy for THEIR daughter to flash themselves to a bunch of drooling idiots? It's because they wouldn't. Well I believe that ALL women are of value - not just my daughters, but other people's daughters as well.

Thanks for the response. We can agree that women should be respected. However, I don't agree that women are NOT being respected by participating in this. Have you talked with any women taking part? To answer your questions: 1. Why is it Ok for Crow to impose his values on the community? It isn't. That's not what he's doing. He is exercising a democratic right to express himself, within the bounds of the law.(It may turn out that what he's doing isn't lawful, and that is being looked at currently.) MANY people WANT to see this parade. You and I may not be amongst them but that doesn't make them wrong. You say most families don't want it, but the evidence suggests otherwise. An Opinion poll recently run here by Sun Live showed the majority in favour. While that isn't definitive, it is more evidence than someone's personal feeling about something. 2. Why isn't it OK for YOUR daughter? You have asked the question then assumed an answer. I don't have a daughter but if I did I would support her in doing whatever she felt was OK for her. If that included opting to show off her body,I'd have no problem with it. It is only a body. We all have one. Provided she is of sound mind and of legal age to make her own decisions, I'd support her right to do so. I'm sure most parents don't always approve of the choices their children make, but it is necessary to let them grow and find their own way. The best you can do is give them the wherewithal to think stright, and make informed choices. You cannot dictate your own values onto them. You have a right to an opinion about it, but you don't have a right to live their life for them. Like you, I believe all women (and men too) are of value (with the possible exception of my ex :-)). We diverge at the point where nudity is supposed to somehow degrade people. I don't think it does.
