A magnitude 5.2 earthquake has struck northwest of Culverden in North Canterbury this morning.
GeoNet reports the quake struck at 9.18am at a depth of 9km.
They describe the intensity as ‘severe'.
It is not yet known if there has been any damage.
An earlier quake near Opotiki this morning, initially classified as a magnitude 6.3, has since been reviewed as a ‘ghost quake'.
