Unique medal for Bay’s best

A select group of Baywide rugby players will have a special reason to remember the Centennial Year of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union after the weekend.

The winners' medals of the five Bartercard Baywide Finals to be played at Greerton Park in the Western Bay of Plenty are unique items.

The medals to be presented to Baywide championship victors have the union's centennial logo on them.

During the 2011 season, the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union celebrates 100 years since formation in 1911.

There are a number of events and functions during the season, which will culminate with the official centenary celebrations to be held in Rotorua on August 12-14.

The Bartercard Baywide finals are the culmination of a Bay of Plenty season, which started back in the balmy days of late March.

Last weekend's semi-finals produced some outstanding action before the Baywide finalists emerged.

The Premier title decider will revive rivalry between the Western Bay of Plenty and Rotorua, when Te Puke Sports and Whakarewarewa square off, on the number one field at Greerton Park at 3pm.

Whakarewarewa last won the Baywide Premier crown in 2006, before Tauranga Sports started a four-year reign as Baywide champions. Last weekend Whaka ended the Tauranga Sports domination of the Premier ranks, when they defeated the Tauranga side 52-30 at Tauranga Sports headquarters.

By contrast, Te Puke Sports has never won the Baywide Premier championship, in spite of making the finals on several occasions.

They will get few better opportunities, with the team posting a nine game winning streak when they got past Mount Maunganui 20-19 in semi-final action last weekend.

Te Teko, which was relegated from the Premier ranks last year, has had its sights on a return to the top echelon all season.

The Eastern Bay side will meet Greerton Marist, which earned a place in the division one final with sheer hard work throughout the season.

Defending colts champion Te Puke Sports has posted an undefeated record during the last two seasons and will face Greerton Marist.

The division two final game, which has the additional prize of promotion to division one next season, will see Western Bay side Arataki meet Poroporo.

Senior reserve titleholder Mount Maunganui has the opportunity to win successive crowns and faces Ngongotaha in the title decider.
