Tauranga building fire now extinguished

UPDATED 7.30AM: Conflicting reports are coming in of the location of the huge fire which broke out in Birch Avenue this morning.

In a series of tweets, a New Zealand Fire Service spokesperson says 13 appliances from across the Bay of Plenty were dispatched to the fire which broke out at the Tauranga MMA Fight Club.

But, a reporter at the scene says it appears the fire broke out in the building behind the fight club at Tauranga Hardware and Plumbing.

'It looks like the firefighters have done a pretty good save, the fire hasn't spread to anywhere else and was confined to that area.

'A witness who lives nearby says he heard a few bangs and few pops at about 5am. He went down to have a look and then saw huge flames.”

EARLIER 7.15AM:

Firefighters have now extinguished a huge building fire which broke out at Tauranga MMA Fight Club on Birch Avenue.

"Fight Club building fire extinguished. Being ventilated. Secondary search now being conducted to ensure building is empty," says a New Zealand Fire Service spokesperson in a post to Twitter.

A reporter at the scene says there's no smoke emanating from the scene and fire crews have begun packing up and were currently leaving the scene.

However, cordons remain on Birch Avenue and Korimiko Street.

EARLIER 7AM:

Fire crews from across the Bay of Plenty are battling a major fire on Koromiko Street in Tauranga this morning.

In a series of tweets, a New Zealand Fire Service spokesperson says in total 13 appliances, some from as far away as Rotorua, are at the scene of the fire which broke out in the Tauranga MMA Fight Club.

When crews arrived at the scene the building was well involved in fire. A primary search was completed by firefighters after concerns people were inside building.

'No one [was] located during primary search.

'Firefighters have contained fire to the building of origin. [Crews] continue to carry out search and rescue and firefighting operations continue.”

Police have since cordoned off Brich Avenue and Korimiko Street.

EARLIER:

A major fire has broken out in Birch Ave/Koromiko Street industrial area.

Callers to SunLive report many fire crews are battling the blaze.

Extras have been called in from neighbouring districts.

One caller says the fire is at the Fight Club in Koromiko St.

Thats a long way to come from Rotorua to help, SURELY there are enough engines here,this would cost a lot of money, gosh it makes me wonder who signs this off,my thoughts only Sunlive Thanks 10-4 out.

I understand that they need to keep a backup ready response capability for other potential emergencies. Hence reallocating other resources. However I did wonder myself was the fire really that big.
