Road open after chemical spill

The Boulevard in Papamoa is closed following a chemical spill.

UPDATED: The Boulevard in Papamoa is open for traffic again after being closed while firefighters dealt with a minor chemical spill.

About 16 litres spilled near one of the roundabouts. The road was closed about 12.20pm and reopened sometime after 2pm.

'It was some sort of acid,” says NZ Fire Service northern communication centre shift manager Scott Osmond.

'It was supposed to be an acid of some sort but it was all watered down, and we ended up watering it down even more. The BOP people were there and they told us what to do, so it was all good.”

A road is closed in Papamoa this afternoon as emergency services deal with a chemical spill.

Firefighters and police are at the of the spill on The Boulevard.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Scott Osmond says the road is closed but there are no evacuations.

"The spill stretches 150m and we don't know what the chemical is."

Scott says the road is closed in case the fire service has to take action once the chemical is identified.

A woman at the scene says it's hydrochloric acid that has been spilt onto the road.

This is yet to be confirmed.
