North beats southern combined

The North Island Indoor Bowls Team won its final tour match against Southland and South Otago combined 33-15 at the Balclutha Memorial Hall, Balclutha on Thursday.

This means they have won six of the seven matches on their tour of the South Island with the tour culminating in the annual North versus South test match for the Kevin Eddy Memorial Trophy at Dunedin on Saturday.


They go into the inter-island test match full of confidence and with a great team spirit.

Their record on tour was a loss to Canterbury 21-27, then wins against Nelson, Golden Bay-Motueka and Marlborough combined 26-22, West Coast 36-12, Ashburton 27-21, South Canterbury and North Otago 30-18, Otago and Central Otago combined 37-11 and Southland and South Otago 33-15.

In the match against Southland and South Otago the North made a good start to win six of the eight sets to lead 12-9.

They won the women's pairs and fours and all of the men's events, singles, pairs, triples and fours. The combined team won the women's singles and triples.

The second round was won by the Southland and South Otago combined team 9-7 to close the gap with the North leading 19-13.

In this round the combined team won the women's singles and triples again and reversed the results in the men's singles and pairs while the women's fours was drawn.

The North was successful in the women's pairs, men's triples and fours.

In the final round the northerners pulled out all the stops to rampage home winning all of the games except the women's pairs.

Eileen Grant, South Otago a former New Zealand representative showed all her experience in the women's singles against the North's 17 year old Teri Anderson to win 12-7, 10-9, 7-12.

In the second set she was trailing 8-9 playing the final end.

Anderson was holding three shots when Grant ran at the head to split out the North's bowls to win 10-9.

However, Anderson held her nerve and came back to win the final set 12-7.

Former South Island representatives Ann Mackie and Caroline Braithwaite along with Maree Swain, Southland upset the previously unbeaten North's women's triple of Lois Randall, Elizabeth Morrow and Lorraine Phipps 10-5, 11-5, 8-10.

The North's women's four of Jenny Stockford, Auckland, Denise Clarkson, Hutt Valley, Margurrite Gerrand, Bay of Plenty and Fiona Anderson, Horowhenua were unbeaten with two wins and a draw against Biddy Craig, Alanna Preddy, Kathryn Edgar and Wendy Proudfoot, South Otago 11-7, 5-5, 8-2.

The North's women's pair of Linda McCurdy, Waikato and Sheree Holmes, Upper Hutt Valley were again in good touch against Jan Low and Belinda Peard, Southland winning the first two sets16-0, 9-7 but Low came back to win the third set 10-4.

The North's men's triple of Paul Wright, Auckland, Jason Parker, Counties, Brent Biggar, North Wellington continue to improve and proved too tough for Stephen Preddy, Robert Wilson and David Horrell, South Otago 5-2, 15-5, 9-6.

Another team coming together ready for the test on Saturday is the North Island's men's four skipped by Grant Harvey, North Taranaki with Robbie Lochrie, Manawatu, Lance Jenner, Auckland and Rodney Mills, Auckland. They defeated Southland's Graham Low, Peter Carnie, BJ Simpson and Shannon Langley 7-4, 8-5, 12-5.
