Bay boxers on Tua undercard

Two Tauranga Boxing Club boxers are on the David Tua undercard to be shown on pay-per-view on Sky Television on Saturday.

Gunnar Jackson, who has been New Zealand's busiest professional boxers in the last 14 months, will endeavour to extend an already sterling record in his 10-fight career.

The Tauranga pro has come a long way since his entrance into the paid ranks in May last year. Just a solitary loss stains his 10-fight record since making his pro debut.

Seven wins and two draws against highly credible opponents tell the tale of a fighter who boxing critics are talking about as a genuine rising prospect.

A draw on the last David Tua fight night (in March), against Samoan star Afakasi Faumuina, made a number of promoters sit up and take notice.

The David Tua rematch with Monty Barrett, who is the only man to put David on the canvas during his long and illustrious career, is the biggest boxing event to be held in the country since Tua v Cameron.

However, the event promoters have done Gunnar no favours with a match-up with former National Amateur Middleweight champion Isaac Peach.

The Auckland based fighter has also impressed in his short Pro career, putting together a five win and one loss record.

Revenge will also be on Jackson's mind as Peach defeated the Tauranga pugilist on the last occasion the pair met in the amateur ranks.

Victory on the Tua undercard is likely to ensure that Gunnar is headed for a showdown for the New Zealand Super Middleweight Championship later in the year.

The second Tauranga boxer to fight on Saturday is local amateur star Anthony Taylor. The 2010 New Zealand Commonwealth Games representative has won two New Zealand Light Welterweight titles.

Anthony has drawn a tough assignment in what is likely to be one of his last bouts in the amateur ranks before turning to paid to punch ranks.

The promoters are bringing Tongan amateur star Lomalito Moala to fight Taylor, who won a bronze medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

This fight is expected to be an absolute thriller.
