A colourful and vibrant new mural depicting Mount Maunganui in all its gorgeousness will now greet users of the Bay of Plenty District Health Board's Physiotherapy Outpatients Department.

The mural was funded from ticket sales to the stage show A Matter of Taste, written by playwright Andrea Kidd and performed by BOPDHB staff and friends at 16th Ave Theatre last September.

In total the show raised $6000 and along with funding the new mural which now adorns the wall in the physio department's small gym, money was also put towards purchasing new rehabilitation equipment and music equipment for the service.

One of the stars of A Matter of Taste was 11-year-old Stephy White who'll be a regular user of the gym and was on hand to help cut the ribbon at today's official unveiling.

'Before it looked really grey and boring and blech. I think the new mural's pretty cool, my favourite part is the ocean and seeing the animals.

'The toys and the new equipment look pretty fun and I think they'll be pretty good to exercise with too.”

The new mural designed and illustrated by BOPDHB graphic designer Christine Clark.

The physio department currently has about 150 patients on its books, and in any given week, between 20-25 children ranging in age and disability use the service.

Physiotherapy leader and A Matter Of Taste director Martin Kidd says it's been a four month journey to get to this point and he's super chuffed to finally unveil the mural which was designed and illustrated by BOPDHB graphic designer Christine Clark.

'The mural was designed primarily with children in mind, but we hope people of all ages will appreciate the art.

'It's the same with the new rehabilitation equipment, we bought them primarily children, but not only with them in mind, and we hope patients of all ages will be able to benefit in some way from the equipment that's here.”
