Carrus Open tees off today

Due to a schedule change in 2016, the 2015 Carrus Tauranga Open men’s and women’s winners Mark Brown and Alanna Campbell have been defending champions for two seasons now. Supplied Photos.

Bay of Plenty's top ranked women's golfer Alanna Campbell will be looking to defend her title at the 10th Carrus Tauranga Open today.

With the Omanu golfer set to start a four-year golfing scholarship at Iowa State University, today's competition at Tauranga Golf Club will be the 18-year-old's final event on the Jennian Homes Charles Tour.

'Campbell has been a regular on the national circuit and with two wins to her name, she has been a great competitor and dominant force at this level. She will no doubt have mountains of local support in her home town,” says a New Zealand Golf spokesperson.

It's been a long time between drinks for the Carrus Open, due to a schedule change last year, which means Lower Hutt golfer and three-time Carrus Open men's winner Mark Brown, like Campbell, has been the defending champion for two seasons now.

Brown has finished third and second respectively in his previous two events and now returns to his own backyard to go one better, much like in 2015 where Brown won by just one stroke over rising amateur Joshua Munn.

But all eyes will be on Wellington golfer Gareth Paddison, who is aiming to achieve three consecutive victories on the Charles Tour and become the first player to complete the remarkable three-peat.

After a playoff victory at the Barfoot & Thompson Akarana Open, followed by a dominant five-shot win at the Autex Muriwai Open, it's hard to bet against the experienced Wellington professional who is arguably in career best form.

The Carrus Open won't be the only trophy in his sight with this being the final event of the summer, meaning the Jennian Homes Trophy will be handed over to the season's highest points scorer on Sunday afternoon.

'I'm not thinking about the overall standings at this stage, I just need to continue my recent form, enjoy the week and stick to my game plan which has been working well,” says Paddison.

This addition to the national circuit has provided players with extra incentive to keep playing here in New Zealand and rewards their perseverance and consistency.

The 2017 Carrus Tauranga Open teed off today at Tauranga Golf Course on Cameron Road in Greerton at 7.15am. For more information, visit www.golf.co.nz
